The CCRI men’s and women’s outdoor track squads- both
unprecedented Northeast District champions- had All-American performances by
Orlagh Cullen (Offaly, Ireland), Jennifer Bento (Providence), Justin Dalton
(Warwick, RI) and Billy Kao (Cranston, RI) at the 2004 NJCAA Division Three
Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Championships held May 5-7 at the Delhi
Institute of Technology in New York.
NJCAA Div. Three Women’s Track Nationals- Delhi, NY.
Orlagh Cullen will have to expand her trophy and plaque
case- considerably- again. She earned two more NJCAA Division Three First
Team All-American plaques, winning two NJCAA national women’s meet
championships in the hammer and the discus. The CCRI women’s squad scored an
all-time best total of 58 points in the 21–team field, trailing ending up
just 1 ½ points from 4th-place Alfred State College (59 1/2).
Cullen, a sophomore, finished her CCRI athletics career
with an all-time CCRI high total of seven All-American designations,
including six in outdoor track and one in women’s soccer. In winning
the hammer throw on Thursday at 44.81 meters, Cullen also broke the former
national record of 43.56 meters set three years ago by CCRI All-American,
Sara Johnson of Warwick. Cullen was 3rd in the javelin at 32.06
meters and 4th in the shot put at 10.86 meters
Cullen, who’ll be attending Sacred Heart University next
year on an athletic scholarship to play women’s soccer, leaves a legacy that
will be hard to follow. She set new marks in the shot put discus and javelin
and participated on two record setting-relay teams, too
Jennifer Bento became a NJCAA Division Three Second Team
All-American by placing second with behind teammate Cullen. The freshman
threw the hammer a distance of 38.16 meters.
Sophomore Jennifer McCormack (Dublin, Ireland) , one of
the school’s most versatile and talented student-athletes ever at CCRI
(participated in 9 events at the Northeast District Meet) culminated her
superb track and field career with 4th place finishes in the 200
meters (26.48, a new school record breaking her former record) and in the
400 meters (1:00.62, also breaking her former mark) while also ranking 5th
in the triple jump at 10.26 meters, yet another new CCRI standard. She, too,
leaves a legacy of excellence having established new records in the 100, 200
and 400 meter runs, the triple jump and on the 4-by-100 meter and
4-by-400-meter relay teams
McCormack also was on the 4th-place 4-by-400
meter relay squad along with freshman Missa Dellay (East Greenwich),
sophomore Jennifer Simas (Cranston) and Cullen) in a time of 4:25.93,
breaking the old relay mark by almost 10 seconds.
2004 NJCAA Div. Three Men’s Track and Field Nationals,
Delhi. NY
For the CCRI men, who finished 8th among 18
teams, Billy Kao, a freshman, earned 2004 NJCAA Division Three All-American
Second-Team All-American selection with a second-place heave of 42.96 meters
in the hammer.
Sophomore Justin Dalton, former Warwick Veterans Memorial
High School standout, also earned 2004 NJCAA Second-Team All-American
honors. The sophomore finished second in the 400-meter intermediate high
hurdles in 56.21 seconds, yet another new CCRI record.
Several other men’s competitors, by placing 3rd
or 4th in respective events, just finished out of the loop for
All-American designations, though they added to the team scores with
impressive efforts.
The contributions of freshman Lawrence Aidoo (Providence/
Ghana, Africa) absolutely can’t be overlooked. The multitalented athlete
added several points to the Knight tracksters’ men’s score. By placing third
in the triple jump at 13.56 meters, 4th in the 100 meter-dash in
11.38 seconds and 4th in the 200 meters at 22.64 seconds and with
his participation on both relay teams , he had a hand in 30 of the Knights
50 points.
The relay team of Eric Estrada (Providence), Aidoo,
Dalton and Evan McGill (Providence) came in 4th in the
4-by-100-meter relay in 43.90 seconds, and then set a new record in the
4-by400-meter relay of 3:29.78, shattering the record they set earlier in
the season by over 10 seconds.
Sophomore Jonathan Reynolds (Cumberland) had a
third-place throw of 42.21 meters in the hammer, an effort that left him
just behind Kao.
CCRI Softball magic ends at the District Championships at the hands of
Delaware Tech on May 8
The CCRI women’s fastpitch softball team’s magical
post-season ride ended at the 2004 NJCAA Northeast District Division Two
playoffs as the Knights were dealt a double loss, 2-1 and 13-3, by host and
NJCAA Region XIX champion, Delaware Technical Community College last
Saturday.
The Knights (14-12, 8-5 in region and 8-5 vs. Division
Two competition) captured their first NJCAA Region XXI championship and
second overall in five years two weeks ago. And they were perhaps a hit away
from registering a big upset in the first game of the double-elimination
championship against the favored and #13 nationally-ranked, whose record
heading into the NJCAA Nationals championships at Fort Dodge, Iowa on May is
38-4.
For after DTCC scored a run each in the bottom of the
fifth and sixth innings to finally break a scoreless deadlock featuring a
mound duel between the DTCC pitcher and CCRI hurler Mary Madison (N.
Kingstown), the Knights finally broke through in the top of the seventh.
After freshman first baseman Lindsay Cavanagh (Warwick) and freshman
shortstop Amanda Ward (East Hartford, CT) singled, sophomore second baseman
Melissa Houston (Warwick) drove in a run with another single. But the
Knights couldn’t push across another run with two runners on first and third
bases, respectively, and the game ended.
Madison pitched a gem, allowing just six hits. The Lady
Knights were led by Cavanagh, who had two hits, including a single that came
in the fourth inning to halt a possible no-hitter.
In the second game, the Knights never could muster enough
firepower against yet another strong pitcher on the DTCC pitching staff.
However, the Lady Knights did strike for two runs in the third inning on a
Lindsay Cavanagh RBI single and an RBI sacrifice fly by Amanda Ward. In the
sixth, after a Melissa Houston double, sophomore Beth Charpentier (Little
Compton, RI) drove her in with a single.
It was the end of an excellent season for the Knights,
who won three of four games in the regionals and reached the districts for
only the second time after capturing the team’s second regional title in the
program’s history.
Amanda Ward, despite joining the season late because of
her contributions on the national tournament-qualifying women’s basketball
team, ended the softball season with one of the highest batting averages
ever- .567- (34 for 60) for a CCRI player. Pending the end of the season
stats for other teams, she currently stands as the NJCAA Division Two #4
hitter nationally, #9 player in home runs (7) including the
nationally-publicized and epic three-grand slam homer game and at #21
nationally in RBIs (38). Her slugging percentage was an unbelievable
1.100 and had an on-base percentage (.556). She struck out only once all
season– that coming in the districts!
Lindsay Cavanagh, the nation’s #13 hitter, was
right behind Ward in hitting with a .494 average, and was the leader in
several offensive categories. She led the squad in hits (42), singles (28),
triples (4) and runs scored (30). She was second in doubles (7), on-base
percentage (.546) and was tied for second in RBIS (28) and homers (3)
Melissa Houston (Warwick), a former Toll Gate High School
sports standout, was another major offensive force for the Lady Knights. She
was the third teammate that hit over .400 (407- 35 for 86, #50 nationally)
and tied for second in homers and RBIs, 3 and 28, respectively, with
Cavanagh.
Sophomore catcher Meredith Merchant (Danielson, CT) hit a
robust .375 with 30 hits in 80 at bats. She scored 17 runs and had three
sacrifices, tops on the squad.
Aubrey Fisher (Somerset, MA), another basketball player
who joined the team late, still managed a healthy .279 average on 17 hits in
61 at bats. The freshman left fielder, who tied for the team lead in walks
with 14, was also fourth in runs scored with 18.
Sophomore Lindsey Sokol (Middletown, RI) had a .307 with
the 4th highest number of hits on the team (30) and added power
with two homers, four doubles, and 20 RBIs.
Freshman second baseman Chris Campo (Coventry HS) hit for
a steady average of .271 with 25 runs scored (second on the team) 23 hits
and 9 RBIs.
Sophomore third baseman Beth Charpentier was steady with
the glove in the field and batted .262 with 17 hits in 65 at bats. She added
9 RBIs.
The team batting average was .343, tied for 9th
nationally with Allegheny Community College.

Despite fine pitching efforts, CCRI baseball team
eliminated after close losses in NJCAA Region XXI playoffs.
The season for the Community College of Rhode Island
baseball team ended following a 2-1 loss to Mitchell College and a 5-3
defeat to #4 nationally-ranked, tourney top seed and eventual region
champion University of Connecticut at Avery Point on Saturday afternoon at
the NJCAA Region XXI Division Two Tournament championship held at Washington
Park in New London, Connecticut. The Knights finished with an overall record
of 16-17, including 8-9 against Region XXI teams and 4-8 versus Division Two
opponents.
The bats for the Knights, whose regular season ended with
seven wins in their last nine games, were mostly silenced by Mitchell’s and
UCAP’s starting pitchers each of whom pitched complete games.
While Knights starter, freshman lefthander Kyle O’Connor
(West Warwick) scattered just six hits and allowed only one earned run in
five solid innings of work, the CCRI hitters mustered just three hits,
walked once and struck out six times against Mitchell starting pitcher Kyle
Wellington. All the scoring in the game, however, would be over by the
fourth inning.
Mitchell scored in the first inning on an error followed
by an RBI double.
In the top of the third, CCRI freshman shortstop Luis
Felix (Cranston) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a fielder’s
choice and was knocked in on a RBI single to center field by freshman
catcher Tom Kelly (West Warwick).
Mitchell, in the bottom of the fourth, scratched out a
run on a walk, a questionable balk call advancing the runner to second and
an RBI single to center field.
Sophomore Brian Thurber (Seekonk, MA) normally a starter,
pitched brilliantly in relief for the Knights. The sophomore righthander
twice pitched out of jams and allowed no runs and one hit with three
strikeouts, providing the Knights some hope for a late-inning rally.
But CCRI’s hitters, though often hitting the ball hard,
couldn’t find the gaps against Wellington. Sophomore outfielder Bob DiLibero
(E. Greenwich) and freshman outfielder Rich Jenkins (Middletown), each with
a single, were the only other Knight players to manage a hit in the first
game.
UCAP.
Against UCAP, Knights hopes for a rebound win brightened
considerably when they scored one run in the first, second and fourth
innings against freshman righthanded hurler Jose Ortiz, the region’s leading
pitcher with a 7-0 record and 0.27 ERA. Indeed, prior to this contest, Ortiz
had given up only one earned run against all region foes.
In the first inning, DiLibero stroked a double just
inside the first-base line to deliver the first run home.
In the bottom of the first, the Knights remained ahead
when they snuffed out a run on a play at the plate. Following a wild pitch
by Knights starting pitcher Ryann Foss (Westerly), catcher Tom Kelly quickly
retrieved the ball at the backstop and threw to Foss, tagging out UCAP
runner Will Huntington, who had tried to scored all the way from second on
an aborted hit-and-run effort.
Foss got out of a base-loaded jam in the second by
forcing a fly-ball out
Jenkins had a solo homer over the left field fence in the
second to give the Knights their biggest lead, 2-0. But in the third, UCAP
tied the score on a sacrifice fly and a ground-ball error.
Jenkins came though again in the fourth with an RBI
double to stake the Knights to a 3-2 leads.
But unfortunately for the Knights, after leaving three
runners on in the first four innings, Ortiz settled down.
The Pointers finally created breathing space for their
pitching ace by scoring three times in the sixth on two hits and two long
sacrifice flies- one of which was a spectacular catch by Greg Allen
(Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS) near the fence in left- gave them the first lead
of the game. Another long fly ball couldn’t be caught and it was ruled an
error, driving in another run.
Freshman Andy McNulty (Norwood, Mass.) came in as a
reliever in the sixth and he responded by shutting down UCAP the rest of the
way with one-hit ball, allowing no earned runs, and recording one strikeout.
Knight notes:
Westerly’s freshman duo of Ryann Foss and Troy Sainsbury
each had very solid seasons for the Knights. Sainsbury, with a 2-0 record,
appeared in 9 games, three in which he started. In 16 innings pitched, he
yielded just 11 hits, only 5 earned runs, issued 12 walks, struck out 89 and
registered a 2.81 ERA.
Among starting pitchers, Kyle O’Connor ended the season
as the Knights leader in wins at 4-2 and was the second leading pitcher in
ERA at 3.43 The freshman, in 10 appearances and 27 innings, allowed just 10
earned runs, gave up 24 hits, and struck out 17 while issuing a mere 9 walks
the entire season, exhibiting excellent mound presence and control.
Foss ended the season as one of the top five Division Two
junior college pitchers in strikeouts per inning with 69 K’s in 49 innings
pitched, or 1.41 per inning. He had a 2-3 record with a 3.67 ERA in 8 total
appearances. He gave up just 35 hits, yielded 20 earned runs and walked 21
batters.
McNulty, who finished with a 3-5 mark with 15
appearances- 6 of them as a starter. In 53 innings he gave up 22 earned
runs, struck out 55 batters and walked 23 for an ERA of 3.74.
Thurber (0-6, 7.57 ERA) saved his best efforts for the
last part of the season. The 6-1 righthander, who started 7 games among his
12 appearances, pitched superbly in relief his last three appearances.
Besides his sterling effort against Mitchell, he allowed just one hit and no
runs in a 11-5 win over Roxbury in 1 2/3 innings. He held Navy Prep
scoreless in one inning in a 12-2 win. In 35 innings, he had 32 strikeouts.
He will be attending Central Connecticut State University, an NCAA Division
One institution next season on an athletic scholarship.
Last year, the righthander had a 3-4 record with a fine
earned-run average of 3.53, the second-best ERA among starters on the squad.
He also had an excellent strikeout per inning ratio, whiffing 30 batters in
just 26 innings (1.1) Majoring in Business Management, he has achieved a
3.42 GPA, earning him 2003-04 CCRI Distinguished Student-Athlete honors.
The leading hitter for the Knights this season,
especially in the last half of the season, and one of the top batters in the
region, was freshman third baseman Greg Allen (Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS)
with a .387 average. In 93 at bats, he scored 28 runs, had 36 hits, had 19
RBIs, 18 doubles- or half his hits, one homer and walked 17 times. Allen had
raised his average all the way to .424 (#4 nationally) before the regionals.
Second baseman Dave Giorgi (N. Kingstown) finished his
career with a .326 average this season. In 92 plate appearances, he scored
19 runs, had 30 hits 19 RBI, 5 doubles, 1 triple. The 2044 NJCAA Region XXI
Defensive Player of the Year, he made just one error in 85 chances with a
near-perfect .989 average. He had 39 assists and 6 putouts. Allen had raised
his average all the way to .424 (#4 nationally) before being shut down in
the regionals.
One of the Knights most consistent hitters all season was
Bob DiLibero. The sophomore from East Greenwich ended his season with a .321
average, going 27 for 84 with 18 RBIs, 8 doubles and a team-leading (tied)
three home runs. He also led the squad in walks with 21.
Rich Jenkins was the hottest batter for the Knights the
last three weeks of the season, raising his average from .188 to .315. He
was 17 for 54 with 11 RBIs and 4 doubles and scored 18 runs. He was the
team’s second leading basestealer with 7 stolen bases in 8 attempts.

CCRI baseball team enters the Division II Regional
tournament on a three game win streak......
The CCRI baseball team knocked off Roxbury Community
College, 11-5, to end the regular season on a three-game win streak. Winners
of 7 of their last 9, the Knights are currently 16-15, 8-7 in NJCAA Region
XXI competition and 4-6 in Division Two. Sophomore second baseman Dave
Giorgi (N. Kingstown HS) went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple while
freshman shortstop Rich Jenkins (Middletown HS) walloped a 380-foot homer
over the left-field fence
Greg Allen (Dighton-Rehoboth Reg., HS, MA) has
skyrocketed into the 34th leading hitter nationally after his combined
efforts (7 for 9) against Navy Prep on Tuesday and Roxbury Community College
on Thursday. The freshman third baseman went a perfect 5 for 5 in a 12-2 win
over Navy, scoring two runs and driving in three with three doubles. Allen
followed up with a 2-for-4 effort against Roxbury
The Knights are seeded third in the NJCAA Region XXI
Division Two Tournament beginning tomorrow (Sat., May 8) and hosted by the
University of Connecticut at Avery Point at Washington Park in New London,
Connecticut. On Saturday, Game One will feature Mitchell College the
#2 seed (14-10 overall and 6-4 in Reg. XXI), versus #3 Community College of
Rhode Island (14-15, 4-6) starting at 11:00 a.m. at Washington Park. The
loser of Game One meets UCAP, the seed and # 4 nationally-ranked (33-4, 9-1)
in Game Two at 2:30 p.m. The winner of Game One plays the winner of
Game Two in Game Three on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. On Sunday, Game Four will be
played at 12:00 noon with Game Five, if necessary, to follow immediately
afterwards.
Here’s a breakdown of the other athletes as they prepare
for the regionals on Saturday against Mitchell College and the University of
Connecticut at Avery Point. The team is batting .305, a significant
improvement over a few weeks ago and have a team ERA of 4.99
The leading hitter for the Knights is Allen, .424 with 19
RBIs and a team-leading 36 hits, 18 doubles and David Giorgi, a solid .357
with 30 hits (tied for second) and six stolen bases in six attempts.
Sophomore outfielder Robert DiLibero (East Greenwich) has
been steady all season. Hitting .321, he has 25 hits in 78 plate appearances
with 18 RBIs. He leads the team in homers (3) and in walks (19).
Rich Jenkins (Middletown) has upped his average lately to
.298, going 14 for 47. The freshman is second on the Knights with two homers
and has 9 RBIs.
Sophomore designated hitter/first baseman Chris Bugyi
(Milford, CT) is batting .267 with a team-leading 22 RBIS on 23 hits.
Freshman outfielder Dan Horan ( Narragansett) has a
batting average of .261 with 12 hits in 46 at bats and 4 RBIs.
David Fyfe (Attleboro, MA) is batting .233 with 7 hits in
30 at bats.
Freshman catcher Tom Kelly (West Warwick) has a batting
average of .255 12 hits in 47 at bats with 10 RBIs and 4 doubles.
Josh Ladig (Pompano Beach, FL) is hitting .220, with 13
hits in 59 at bats.
Freshman infielder Louis Felix (Cranston HS East) is
hitting .152, going 7 for 46.
Freshman Ryann Foss (Westerly) , meanwhile, continue to
be one of the nation’s leaders in strikeouts per inning. With 66 in 48
innings, he’s whiffing an average of 1.37 batters per inning, or 5th
nationally. Foss has a 3.14 ERA and has allowed 22 earned runs in 43 innings
while issuing 18 bases on balls.
Freshman Kyle O’Connor (West Warwick) leads the Knigths
in wins with a 4-1 record and a fine 3.27 ERA, allowing 8 earned runs giving
up 18 hits in 22 innings while walking eight.
Freshman righhanded pitcher Marek Deska (Onatrio, Canada)
at 3-1 leads the pitching staff in ERA at 2.41. In 21 2/3 innings, he’s
surrendered only 16 hits and given up 7 earned runs while walking just two.
Troy Sainsbury (Westerly) has a 2-0 record with a 2.81
ERA. In nine relief appearances, in 16 innings of work, he’s yielded only 11
hits and 5 earned runs, striking out 8 batters and walking 12.
Andy McNulty (Norwood, MA), with a respectable 3.88 ERA,
has a 3-5 record. In 14 appearances, he has pitched 51 innings and given up
22 earned runs, while surrendering 49 hits, striking out 54 opponents
(second on the squad) and walking 23.
Freshman righthanded pitcher Josh Pickering (Attleboro,
MA) has a 1-0 record.
Sophomore righty Chris Farmer (N. Kingstown HS) has a 0-0
record as a pitcher and is hitting .222 with 2 hits in 9 at bats.
Freshman righthanded hurker Dan Lanoue (Cranston East HS)
has a 0-0 record with a 5.41 ERA. In 3 1/3 innings, he’s given up 4 hits and
2 earned runs.
Sophomore pitcher and utility player Kevin Maguire (S.
Kingstown) has a 1-0 record and a 6.60 ERA. In 15 innings of work, Maguire
has given up 12 hits, struck out 14, walked 11 and yielded 11 earned runs.
Maguire is hitting .217 with 5 hits in 23 at bats.
Sophomore Brian Thurber (Seekonk, MA, St. Rapahel
Academy) has a 0-6 mark. In 11 appearances and 32 2/3 innings, he’s given up
30 earned runs, striking out 29.

Dates and times of the NJCAA Region XXI Division II
baseball championships are announced...
The NJCAA Region XXI Division Two Baseball Championships
will be held on Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9 hosted by the University
of Connecticut at Avery Point at Washington Park in New London.
On Saturday, Game One will feature Mitchell
College the tourney’s #2 seeded team (14-10 overall and 6-4 in Reg. XXI),
versus #3 seed Community College of Rhode Island (14-15, 4-6) starting at
11:00 a.m. at Washington Park.
The loser of Game One meets the UCAP, the seed and # 4
nationally-ranked (33-4, 9-1) in Game Two at 2:30 p.m.
The winner of Game One plays the winner of Game Two in
Game Three on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
On Sunday, Game Four will be played at 12:00 noon
with Game Five, if necessary, to follow immediately afterwards.

The Community College of Rhode Island women’s fastpitch
softball squad (14-10), NJCAA Region XXI champions, plays host and #13
nationally-ranked Delaware Technical and Community College (33-4), Region
XIX champions, at the Owens campus in Georgetown, Delaware at noon on
Saturday, May 8, for a best two-of-three series to determine the 2004 NJCAA
Northeast District Division Two championship. A second game will be played
immediately afterwards. If the teams split, the two squads would meet again
at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 9 in a winner-take-all finale.
The district winner qualifies for the 2004 NJCAA Women’s
Fastpitch Division Two National Championships to be played on May 20-22 in
Fort Dodge, Iowa.

CCRI men's and women's outdoor track teams win
respective NJCAA outdoor track & field division III championships for first
time at Bergen County CC (NJ) on April 30
The CCRI men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams
captured the NJCAA Northeast District Outdoor Track and Field Championships
held at Bergen County Community College in Paramus, New Jersey. This marked
the first time both Knights squads both captured the outdoor track district
titles in the school’s history. Both squads, currently ranked #5 nationally,
respectively, now head to the NJCAA National Outdoor Track and Field
Championships to be held on May 6-8 at Delhi (NY) College.
Among the Knight men traveling to the nationals will be
freshman Lawrence Aidoo (Ghana, Africa), one of the top Division
Three junior colleges sprinters nationally, ranking #2 in the 100 meters
(10.90) and #3 in the 200 meters (22.35 ). At the districts he was first in
the 100 meters (11.35) and second in the 200 (22.44). His win in the triple
jump at the districts with a leap of 13.35 meters places him #4 in that
category and also qualified him for the national.
Sophomore Justin Dalton (Warwick) was 2nd
in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles districts and ranks 2nd
nationally. In the hammer, sophomore Billy Kao (Cranston) is
the national leader at 47.20 meters or 154 feet, 10 ¼ inches. His sophomore
teammate, Jonathan Reynolds (Cumberland), is #4 nationally and will
join Kao in that event at the nationals. Reynolds also is a national
qualifier in the discus, #5 nationally.
Other men joining their CCRI teammates at the nationals
include sophomore l (Providence), #9 in the 100 meters (11.24) and #10 in
the 200 (23.04). freshman Eric Estrada, (Providence) #14 at 400
meters; sophomore Mike Podgorski (Warwick) and freshman Matt Zompa (
Providence), competing in the javelin and ranking #9 nationally.
The 4-by-100-meter relay team (first at the districts
with a school record of 43.37 seconds) and the 4-by-400-meter relay teams,
both squads consisting of McGill, Dalton, Estrada and Aidoo, are also
national qualifiers.
The CCRI women’s outdoor track and field squad won their
first district championship with a total of 114 points to 89 for
second-place Queensborough (NY) CC. Sophomore Jennifer McCormack (Dublin,
Ireland), participating in a school-record nine events overall,
established a new mark of 1:01.13 in the 400-meter run. She also was second
in the 400 (1:01.13, a new school record) and 800-meter (2:47.33) She also
amassed several other points by helping the 4-by-100 meter and
4-by-400-meter relay teams to second-place finishes. McCormack is #4 in the
200 meters, #3 in the 400 and #7 I the triple jump.
Orlagh Cullen, already a four-time NJCAA Division
Three Outdoor Track and Field All-American, seeks to add more laurels at the
nationals in her four favorite events. The sophomore from Offaly, Ireland is
ranked #1 nationally in the discus and hammer, #2 in the javelin and #5 in
the shotput.
The quartet of Jennifer Simas (Cranston), Dellay,
Cullen and McCormack will be competing in the nationals in the 4-by-100
meter and 4-by-400 meter relay teams.

Women's Softball team earns trip to Northeast
District championships in Delaware; wins first Region XXI division II title
since 1999 with victories over Dean and Orange County CC of NJ.....
The CCRI women’s fastpitch softball squad won three out
of four games, including the 12-1 finale against Orange County (NY) CC, to
capture the NJCAA Region XXI Division Two championship on Sunday at Dean
College in Franklin, Massachusetts.
CCRI won two games on Saturday, with their first win an
upset, 6-3 over Dean College (20-13), defending region champion and #1 seed
as freshman pitchers Becky Boisvert (Uxbridge, MA ) and Mary
Madison (N. Kingstown) combining for a three-hitter. Sophomore Beth
Charpentier (Little Compton) came through with the winning hit in the
bottom of the seventh inning later on Saturday to defeat Orange County, 6-5,
and earn a bye into the championship round.
The Lady Knights then watched Dean’s second loss of the
double-elimination tourney by Orange County (5-4), setting up the
championship match on Sunday. CCRI first lost, 14-7, but rebounded in
excellent fashion in winning the championship game, 12-1, on a brilliant
three-hitter by Madison.
The Lady Knights record, now 14-10, advance to the 2004
NJCAA Northeast District Division Two championships to be played on May 8-9
at the site of the winner of the NJCAA Region XIX winner. The district
winner will qualify for the 2004 NJCAA National FastPitch championships on
May 20 at Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Freshman Amanda Ward (East Hartford, CT), who
blasted three grand slam homers in a game versus Mitchell last week, upped
her batting average to .612 (30 for 49), the nation’s second best average in
Division Two. Freshman Lindsay Cavanagh (Warwick) is also hitting a
lusty .493, sophomore Melissa Houston (Warwick), 413 and sophomore
Meredith Merchant (Danielson, CT) a robust .397.
CCRI tennis team places second at Region XXI division
III championships held at Holyoke CC (MA).....
The CCRI tennis squad, defending NJCAA Region XXI
champions, finished second to host Holyoke (MA) CC at the NJCAA Region XXI
Division Three Championships held on May 1-2. Holyoke had 12 points to the
Knights 11. Mitchell College had 1. CCRI finished with an overall record of
6-1 in the region, 51-6 in singles play and 19-2 in doubles matches. Coach
Brian Deighan, a former All-Region player at CCRI, was the team’s
first-year coach.
The following CCRI players earned All-Region First Team
honors by becoming region champions: sophomore Rolando Yotharath
(Woonsocket) #3 singles (7-6, 6-4) and #2 doubles (6-2, 6-0); freshman
Tim Leonard, (Scituate, RI), #4 singles (forfeit winner) and #2
doubles; freshman Josh Foster (Woonsocket, RI), #5 singles (6-2, 6-1)
and #3 doubles (6-1, 7-5) sophomore Sara Mills (Woonsocket), #3
doubles (6-1, 7-5) and sophomore Elliott LeFaiver (Warwick), First
Team All-Region, #2 doubles (6-2, 6-0)
Foster was undefeated all season in singles (6-0) and
doubles (5-0) as was Yotharath, #7-0 at #2 singles and 6-0 in doubles,
including 5-0 at #2

AMANDA WARD OF THE CCRI WOMEN’S FASTPITCH SOFTBALL
TEAM HITS THREE GRAND SLAMS IN ONE GAME AS CCRI BEATS MITCHELL COLLEGE,
26-1, IN NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT ON WEDNESDAY
Amanda Ward of East Hartford, Connecticut,
a freshman shortstop for the Community College of Rhode Island women’s
fastpitch softball team, hit three grand slam home runs, including two in
the first and one in the second inning in a 26-1 win over host Mitchell
College on Wednesday in New London, Connecticut. In the second game of the
doubleheader Ward went 5 for 5 by adding two singles, driving in a total of
14 runs, accounting for 14 total bases and scoring five runs. CCRI won the
first game, 11-7, with Ward going 4 for 4 with a two-run homer, double and
two singles. For the doubleheader, Ward was a perfect 9 for 9 and scored 9
runs, with a total of 4 singles, 1 double, and 4 homers adding up to 21
total bases, 18 RBIs and a stolen base. With her offensive onslaught, Ward
currently ranks second nationally in hitting with a .595 average and is tied
for 11th nationally (NJCAA Division Two) in homers with 6.

will be honored by the Rhode Island Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics for Women at their banquet on May 5, 2004 from 5-7 pm on the
Knight Campus of CCRI. The RIAIAW will present the award to Orlagh
in the Board Room (room 4090) on the Knight Campus of CCRI. Each
Institution of Higher Education has chosen a student-athlete that will
honored that evening.

CCRI baseball team is off to a 9-12 start; Ryan Foss, Westerly freshman
pitcher (1.55 strikeouts per inning) and Matt Newsome, Providence sophomore
centerfielder (20 stolen bases) are in top 10 national categories in NJCAA
Division Two
The CCRI baseball team is currently 9-12 overall, with a
NJCAA Division Two record of 3-10 and a NJCAA Region XXI record of 1-4. (See
attached sheets, including baseball roster sheet, for more specific
information on your local athletes)Luckily, the rain did not cause any
postponements of games this week with the next scheduled away game in a
doubleheader on Sunday, April 18, vs. the University of New Haven subvarsity.
Ryann Foss, a freshman righthanded pitcher from Westerly,
1-2 with a 3.34 ERA, has 1.55 strikeout-per-inning average (46 in 29 2/3
innings, placing him 3rd nationally). In a recent loss against
Dean College, Foss struck out 18 batters.
Sophomore centerfielder Matt Newsome (Providence
/Classical HS) has stolen 20 bases in 20 attempts, tying him for 6th
nationally. The leadoff hitter has also recently raised his average
significantly to .274 and now has 17 hits in 62 plate appearances.
The leading hitter for the Knights is Marc Fedrico (Warren/
Mt. Hope HS), a sophomore first baseman and designated hitter with a
.393 average. He also leads the Knights in hits (22) runs scored (17) and
RBIs (18)
Others who’ve hit well are sophomore outfielder Bob
DiLibero (East Greenwich), .340, 16 hits, 10 RBIs and 7 doubles; freshman
catcher Gregg Allen ((Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS), .327, 18 hits, 11 RBIs, and
a team-leading 8 doubles and sophomore outfielder Ryan McCann (New Bedford,
MA), .302, second in the team both in hits (19) and in RBIs (15)
Sophomore second baseman David Georgi (N. Kingstown) is
at.281, going 15 for 53 with 11 RBIs and 3 doubles. Sophomore first
baseman/designated hitter Chris Bugyi (Milford, CT) is hitting .273
with 15 hits and 10 RBIs.
In reserve roles, freshman second baseman David Fyfe (Attleboro,
MA) is batting .286 (6 for 21) while freshman catcher Tom Kelley (West
Warwick) has an average of .241, going 7 for 29 with 7 RBIs.
Leading pitchers are freshman Kyle O’Connor (W.
Warwick, RI) with a 2-0 record and a 1.35 ERA. He has allowed 9 hits in
13 1/3 innings, striking out 10 batters and walking five.
Freshman righthanded pitcher Marek Deska (Ontario,
Canada) has a 3-1 record with a 2.45 ERA, allowing 4 hits, 4 earned runs
and 4 bases on balls while striking out 22 batters in just 14 2/3 innings.

FOUR-YEAR SCHOOLS, PERFORM WELL AT RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE INVITATIONAL
The CCRI men’s outdoor track and field
team finished 6th and the CCRI women’s squad came in 5th
at the Rhode Island College Invitational held in the rain in Providence on
Saturday, April 2. Several Knight athletes (in bold below) earned a spot in
the NJCAA Division Three National Championships to be held in Delhi, NY on
May 6-8 with their performances with national qualifying performances in
their respective events. School records (SR) were established by sophomore
Justin Dalton (Warwick) in the 400-meter hurdles, 57.56 seconds and the
women’s 4-x-400 relay team of freshman Missa Dellay (E. Greenwich), Jennifer
Simas (Cranston) Jenny McCormack (Dublin, Ireland) and Orlagh Cullen (Offaly,
Ireland) who combined to for a time of 4:35.47.
Sophomore Orlagh Cullen led the way for
CCRI athletes with two first-place finishes in the discus and hammer and
national qualifying distances in the javelin, hammer, discus and shot put
and as a member of the 4-x-400-meter relay team, she helped set the new CCRI
women’s record of 4:35.7. Sophomore Justin Dalton (Warwick) shattered the
previous record in the 400-meter hurdles by over 5 seconds with a time of
57.56. Both were named respective CCRI Athletes of the Week.

CCRI BASEBALL, #19 NATIONALLY IN PRESEASON POLL,
HAVE SET LOFTY GOALS THIS SEASON
The pre-season NJCAA Division Two poll has the 2004
version of the Knights ranked #19 nationally. But head coach Ken Hopkins,
now in his fourth season, feels that if the team can stay healthy and play
good defense, they could go a long way toward a top 10 ranking.
The pitching staff seems to be one of the best in recent
memory. The rotation is led by Brian Thurber (Seekonk, Mass., St. Raphael
Academy), one of the top-ranked pitchers in New England and a second-team
All-NJCAA Region XXI selection a year ago and newcomer Ryann Foss Bridgton
Academy, Westerly High School. Freshman Andy McNulty (Norwood, Mass.) a 6’4"
righthander, is the likely #3 hurler in the rotation. Sophomore lefty Kyle
O’Connor (West Warwick) and freshman Marek Deksa (Toronto, Canada) will see
plenty of action at the #4 spot. There’s plenty of mound depth offered by
Troy Sainsbury (Westerly), Chris Farmer (transfer from Bates College) and
Josh Pickering (Attleboro HS). Lefty veteran Kevin Maguire (South Kingstown
HS) along with freshman righty Dan Lanoue (Cranston East) are the type of
closer quality ‘bookends’ who’ll likely shut down many rival batters in
close contests when it counts the most.
This season’s offense will be significantly bolstered by
these returning sophomores: third baseman Marc Federico (Mt. Hope HS);
leftfielder Ryan McCann (New Bedford HS); centerfielder Matt Newsome
(Providence, Classical HS), first baseman/designated hitter Chris Bugyi
(Milford Academy, CT); designated hitter Bobby Diliberio (East Greenich HS)
and second baseman David Giorgi (N. Kingstown HS). Also likely to see much
playing time at second base is Dave Fyfe (Attleboro HS) and newcomer Gregg
Allen (Dighton Rehoboth HS) behind the plate. Rich Jenkins (Middletown HS)
is the starting shortstop and Dan Horan (Narragansett HS) is starting in
right field.
Others competing for playing time include shortstop Luis
Felix (Cranston HS East) catchers Tom Kelly (W. Warwick HS) and Bryan
Abenante (Johnston HS).
Overall Coach Hopkins, along with assistant coaches Ray
Tessaglia and Joe Vigeant are confident the Knights will rebound from an
18-10 season last year. As long as the team continues to work hard and play
good defense, there’s an excellent chance they will not only improve on that
mark, but return to and win the New England championships for the 10th
time, with an eye then toward the 2004 National Junior College World Series.

selected as NCAA Division Two/Three/Community College Coach of the Year
by R.I. Basketball Media
The Rhode Island Basketball Media has named CCRI
Women’s Basketball head coach Steve Ceseretti (Cranston) as the
(combined) NCAA Division Two/Three/ Community College Women’s Basketball
Coach of the Year.
Ceseretti was previously named as the NJCAA Region
XXI and NJCAA Northeast District Coach of the Year, the first time a
CCRI women’s basketball coach has ever received both honors in the same
season. In his first year as head coach at CCRI, guided the squad to the
program’s first-ever NJCAA Region XXI and Northeast District titles and
their first appearance at the NJCAA National Division Two Tournament.
While defeating a school-record six Division One opponents, the Lady
Knights also achieved a 22-10 record, the most wins ever by a CCRI
women’s hoop program. The squad also won the region’s Team Sportsmanship
Award.

CCRI BASEBALL TEAM IS 5-8 OVERALL
AFTER FACING SUCCESSION OF NJCAA DIVISION
TWO NATIONALLY-RECOGNIZED TEAMS
The CCRI baseball squad, ranked #19 nationally in the
NJCAA pre-season polls, is currently at 5-9 following a 3-4 road trip in
Florida, a 1-2 record on the road against perennial national power
Delaware Technical Community College and a doubleheader loss to
undefeated University of Connecticut at Avery Point last Saturday in
Warwick. The Knights are 1-2 against NJCAA Region XXI competition,
having defeated Quinsigamond (Worcester, MA) CC, 7-1, last week in
Warwick.
The team’s current batting leaders are as follows:
Among the starters, sophomore outfielder Ryan McCann
(New Bedford, MA) is leading the team in several offensive categories:
average (.410), at bats (39), runs scored (10), hits (16) and RBIs (8).
He was CCRI named Male Athlete of the Week after several outstanding
hitting performances in Florida.
Right behind McCann in hitting is sophomore first
baseman/third baseman Marc Federico (Warren, RI/ Mt. Hope HS), hitting a
lusty .406, with 13 hits in 32 plate appearances. He’s tied for the team
lead in RBIs (8) and leads the squad in doubles (4). He’s also hit one
of the two homers hit thus far by the squad. Freshman second baseman
David Fyfe (Attleboro, MA) has also contributed in a reserve role with
an impressive .417 average, going 5 for 12 with 2 runs scored.
Other Knights hitting .300 or over are: David Georgi,
sophomore second baseman (N. Kingstown HS), .318, 7 for 22 and freshman
catcher Gregg Allen (Dighton-Rehoboth Regional (MA) HS, .308, 8 for 26,
one homer, 4 RBIs and sophomore first baseman/designated hitter Chris
Bugyi (Milford, CT), hitting .300 with 9 hits in 30 at bats.
Leadoff hitter Matt Newsome, a sophomore outfielder
from Providence (Classical HS) has accounted for half (7) of the team’s
total of stolen bases (14) and has drawn 8 walks.

Reynolds break school records in the weight throw
and become first CCRI indoor track competitors ever to score
at the nationals.
CCRI indoor track competitors Orlagh Cullen (Offaly,
Ireland) finished 7th in the women’s weight throw and
sophomore Jonathan Reynolds (Cumberland, RI) came in 8th
in the men’s weight throw at the NJCAA Track and Field
Championships held at Manhattan, Kansas. Both became the first
CCRI indoor track and field athletes to place in the nationals
in the program’s three-year history.
Cullen’s heave of 46, 6 ¾" set a new record, breaking her
previous school-best mark of 44 feet, 11 and ½ inches set on
January 31 at the Wesleyan University Invitational in
Middletown, CT.
Reynolds throw of 44 feet, 11 inches also set a new standard
in the men’s weight throw, shattering his previous school record
of 43 feet, 6 ½ inches also set on Jan. 31.
Sophomore Jenny McCormack (Dublin, Ireland) came in 18th
place with a time of 8.42 seconds in the 60-meter dash
preliminaries.
Lawrence Aidoo (Ghana, Africa) broke two school records
despite not placing in the finals at the nationals. His 20th-place
finish of 22.82 seconds in the 200 meter dash broke his former record
(23.12) set just three weeks ago by three-tenths of a second. And his
time of 7.03 seconds in the 60-meter dash broke Mario Miranda’s record
of 7.10 seconds set two years ago.

CCRI women’s basketball squad makes it to nationals with a thrilling
75-72 win over Mercer County Community College in Trenton, NJ.
The CCRI women’s basketball team qualified for its first trip ever to
the national tournament in 27 years of competition, squeezing out a
pulsating, nerve-wracking , 75-72, overtime win over Mercer County
Community College in the NJCAA Northeast District Division Two
Championship game on Saturday afternoon in Trenton, NJ.
The first-time Region XXI champion Lady Knights, who continue to
break new ground as they improved their record to a program-best 22-8
record, now advance to the NJCAA National Division Two Tournament to be
held March 17-20 in Overland, Kansas.
Jamie Angell, a 5-5 sophomore guard from Cranston, led all Lady
Knight scorers with 20 points followed by 5-8 freshman guard Amanda Ward
(East Hartford, CT) with 17 and 5-7 freshman guard Jeanell Hughes
(Baltimore, MD) with 15.
The defending Region XIX champion Lady Vikings (23-4), who sustained
half of their losses against the Lady Knights, had a game-high 22 points
from freshman guard Tashema Whitaker. Nicole Riley added 13.
CCRI, which led for most of the contest, had to sweat out a rally by
the hosts, who trailed, 53-42, on two free throws by Ward with 7:15
left. CCRI had a chance to keep Mercer at bay, but missed seven of eight
free throws down the stretch, including five of six in the last minute.
To the delight of their fans, Mercer kept chipping away until finally
tying the score, 58-58, on one of two foul shots made by Nicole Brown
with 3.7 seconds left in regulation.
The Lady Knights regrouped and burst out quickly in the extra
session. Ward made a layup on an assist from Angell and Mercer’s Nicole
Riley (13 points, 7 in overtime) responded with a power layup to tie the
score again. Ward made another basket and Angell hit her third
three-pointer for a five-point cushion. Mercer closed to within two
twice more until Hughes hit a deep three for a 71-66 lead at 1:31.
Sandwiched around three foul shots by Ward, including her last one
with 31.7 seconds left, were three huge defensive stops by CCRI. Hughes
forced a turnover by Brown, and, with 14 seconds left, 6-0 freshman
center LaRae Rhodes (Warwick) blocked a layup attempt by Whitaker,
regained the ball and was fouled. She made one of two free throws for
the game’s final points. Hughes stole the ball on one more last-gasp
attempt by the Lady Vikings.
`` These were two evenly matched teams,’’ said head coach Steve
Ceseretti, in his first year at CCRI. ``We played pretty good defense
and it all came down to making big defensive stops at the end. This was
like the first game when we played them (won by CCRI, 80-74) when they
came back against us in the second half then, too.’’
Nicole Brown, the Lady Vikings leading scorer (15.0 ppg) who had
torched the Lady Knights earlier for 21 points, was firmly held in check
by Hughes, finishing with 8. Meanwhile, Whitaker, who scored her teams’
first 8 points in the game’s first five minutes, was contained for most
of the game afterwards by Angell. And MCC forward Vikki Jenkins, also
averaging 15, could manage just nine points.
CCRI led, 38-28, in the first half, converting many of their points
off 13 MCC turnovers in large part due to the Lady Knights full-court
pressure. Angell’s had 12 points, making her first five shots while
Hughes, Rhodes and Haynes all added 6 points each in the first 20
minutes. Only Whitaker’s 12 points kept CCRI from a much bigger lead.
The contributions by three freshmen off the bench were enormous.
Ward, Hughes and Rhodes (Warwick) combined for 55%, or 41 of the total
75 points.
Rebecca Haynes, a sophomore forward from Queensland, Australia,
quietly added these impressive all-around stats: 6 points, 8 steals, 6
assists, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks.``I used our freshmen more against Mercer because their players were
so quick and we have some young athletic freshmen of our own to match up
against them,’’ said Ceseretti.
Men's and Women's Basketball teams earn Regional
honors which included Region XXI Sportsmanship Awards, Coach of the
Year, and First Team All-Region selections. Women's
basketball head coach Steve Ceseretti was voted Region XXI Coach of the
year. The women's team was also honored by receiving the Region
XXI Sportsmanship Award. The Men's team also earned the Region XXI

Team travels to Disney's Wide World of Sports facility to begin
the 2004 season. Coaches Beverly Wiley and Liz Afonso
took their Lady Knight Softball team to Disney's Wide World of Sports to
play six games in four days and get a head start on the season. The
trip was very successful even though the Knights finished 2-4. The
Lady Knights won the first two games against Burlington CC from New Jersey.
Sophomore Melissa Houston hit a two run homer as pitcher Mary Madison took
the win with a two-hitter. In the second game of the double header,
freshmen Cristina Campo and Lindsay Cavanaugh both had three hits while
sophomore Meredith Merchant was 2 for 2. Pitcher Mary Madison picthed
a no-hitter helping CCRI to a 12-0 convincing win.
The second match-up against Peninsula CC gave the Knights a true test.
Peninsula won both games 5-3, and 11-3. The Knights Melissa Houston
continued her batting streak going 3 for 3. Freshman pitcher Becky
Boisvert showed that she and Mary Madison will be a terrific 1-2 punch at
the number one position.
The third double header against Ancilla CC from Washington State took place
on Thursday March 11. Lindsay Sokol stepped it up and connected at
each of her three at bat with two RBI's. Lindsay Cavanaugh went two
for four with two doubles.
Coach Beverly Wiley stated "The team has learned a great deal here in
Florida. CCRI has given us the opportunity to travel here (Florida)
and compete against some of the best Junior College teams in the country.
It has been a great experience for all of us and will look forward to future
trips to get us started each season."

Handily defeated #15 Div. Two
nationally-ranked Dean College, 91-64, two weeks ago,
snapping 10-game win streak against Region XXI teams, before
overcoming Massasoit CC and Mitchell College- all
tournament-qualifying teams- in the second half of the
season after losing to them in the first half.
Have three players with 900 or more
points, the highest scoring trio of CCRI two-year teammates
in 39 years of competition: They are sophomore tri-captains
Greg Simoneau (Warwick) Oscar Smith (Memphis, TN) and MD
Mazique (Brooklyn, NY). Simoneau became the 9th
player to surpass 1,000 points on Saturday in 68-60 loss to
Potomac State College, scoring seven points to advance to
1,003, good for 8th place overall. Simoneau
shared CCRI Male Athlete of the Week honors for his
prestigious accomplishment along with Lawrence Aidoo of the
men’s indoor track team.
In January in overtime defeated Broward
CC of Florida (honorable mention in Div. One national polls)
to become the first CCRI team in five years to beat a Div.
One squad.
Have lost narrow decisions to several
highly-regarded squads by six points or less, including to
Notre Dame Prep, one of the top nationally-ranked prep
squads; Division One Globe Institute (21-4); to #10 Div. Two
Monroe CC (NY) and to Navy Prep in double overtime.

Oscar Smith is 20th leading
rebounder in country (9.3 rpg) despite being just 6-2, 190
pounds wile having to guard players up to eight inches and
70 pounds heavier. Also averages 17 points and 56% in

With win on Tuesday, Feb. 24 against Navy
Prep, they would tie record for most wins in a season ever
in the 27-year history of the program.
Improved to 19-8 after defeating Mitchell
College, 76-57 (third win ever over the Lady Pequots- all in
the last two years) on Thursday night.
Have a chance on Tuesday night at home
against Navy Prep to tie the greatest number of wins ever
earned by a CCRI women’s squad. That was 20 set in 1990-91
when men’s head coach Dave Chevalier coached the Lady
Knights to a 20-4 record.

MEMBERS OF CCRI INDOOR TRACK TEAM SMASH MORE RECORDS AT WESLEYAN COLLEGE
INVITATIONAL
Several members of the CCRI indoor track team established
school records at the Wesleyan College Invitational the past week. Sophomore
Jennifer McCormack (Ireland), was named CCRI Female Athlete of the Week for
breaking two women’s records. First McCormack took .01 second off her own
prior record in the 55-meter dash by finishing third in 7.81 seconds. Her
sixth-place time of 2:39.59 in the 800-meter run is also a school record.
Sophomore Jason Andrade (Warwick), in just his first time running the 1000
meters, established a new school record of 2:44.71. Freshman Matthew Zompa’s
(Providence) time of 8.65 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles is also a new
standard. The men’s and women’s squads travel to Hudson Valley Community
College (NY) on Friday to prepare for competition at the 2004 NJCAA
Northeast District Championships this weekend.
Men’s Basketball.
In a wild offensive contest Globe Institute of Technology
(New York, NY) outlasted CCRI, 110-105, in a non-conference contest held in
New York City on Saturday. It was the first loss for the Knights (14-12) in
five games. GIT, a squad ranked among the top 30 in Division One nationally,
improved to 21-4.
GIT had its hands full with Division Two CCRI as the
Knights trailed by 16 at one point, by just three, 52-49, at halftime and
went ahead by as much as 10 in the second half. CCRI had trouble however,
guarding the duo of Nichols, who had a game-high 36 points and McNair, who
added 25.
Greg Simoneau’s 27 points moved him all the way into 11th
place all-time in CCRI men’s scoring history with 940. The 6-3 sophomore
forward from Warwick has averaged 21 points a game in the past three
contests, and with this effort moved into the team scoring lead with an
average of 17.5.
MD Mazique (Brooklyn) added 28 for CCRI in his return to
his home city, including four three-pointers. Two more players hit
career-high- Sophomore guard Pat O’Brien (Narragansett) notched 20 points
while freshman forward Jose Rico (Cranston) hit career-high totals of 17
points and three treys.
The Knights have three contests left, including an away
game tonight at Navy Prep in Newport and an important Div. Two matchup on
Thursday at home vs. Mitchell College.
Women's Basketball
CCRI defeated Globe Institute of Technology, 67-42, in
New York on Saturday for the second time this season. It was the Division
Two Lady Knights sixth win over a Division One club this season, an all-time
record, improving their overall mark to 18-8, the best in 13 years and only
two off their all-time record of 20.
Freshman Amanda Ward (E. Hartford, CT) led the way with
15 points while sophomore guard Jamie Angell (Cranston) had 11 points.
The next two weeks could prove to be historic for the
Lady Knights. On Thursday is a very important regular-season game against
defending region champion Mitchell College, with both teams having split
during the season. A win by either squad will guarantee a spot in the region
finals during the playoffs with a likely meeting again between the two for
the championship hosted by CCRI on Feb. 29.

CCRI MEN’ S AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM
ON A ROLL AS PLAYOFFS APPROACH
CCRI’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are starting to
peak at exactly the right time especially after knocking off two
highly-regarded national squads last week. And with the NJCAA Region XXI
playoffs for men and women being held at the CCRI-Warwick campus on Feb. 28
and Feb. 29, a stronger possibility than ever exists for both teams to
capture a region title. That would be a first for the school.
The CCRI women, winners of 8 of their last 10 contests,
are on a three-game win streak after their road conquest of two Maryland
teams. Indeed, Steve Ceseretti, in his first year as head coach at CCRI, has
already surpassed each of the previous two seasons in wins. The Knights
record of 17-8 represents the most wins since the 1990-91 season when the
Lady Knights were 19-5. And they have a winning record against Division One
programs, going 5-4 thus far with a 9-3 Division Two mark and 3-1 record
against NJCAA Region XXI clubs.
Last weekend, the Lady Knights overcame Prince Georges
CC, 72-52, and then followed up with an important #19 nationally-ranked
72-67 win over Cecil College (14-5), ranked #5 nationally in the pre-season.
Jamie Angell has picked up her intensity and focus the
past week. The 5-5 sophomore point guard from Cranston was named as CCRI
Female Athlete of the Week after a 23-point outing in an 87-70 loss to #13
nationally ranked Louisburg College, and proceeded to have two more
impressive appearances. She had 10 points and 6 assists against Prince
George and 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting versus Cecil.
The Lady Knights couldn’t slice the offensive loaf any
closer with NO players averaging in double figures! Amanda Ward (Hartford,
CT) has a 9.7 ppg average closely tailed by Sara Duszkiewicz (S. Kingstown,
RI), 9.3 ppg, Rebecca Haynes (Australia), 9.1 ppg and Angell, 9.0 ppg.
Roxanne Reid (Ontario, Canada) is at 8.0 ppg and Carla Hands (Boston, MA) is
at 6.9 ppg. Angell has 2.3 assists per game with Jeannell Hughes (Baltimore,
MD) at 2.0 apg. Angell leads in steals at 2.3 and Haynes has 2.2 spg.
So CCRI seems to have just one task remaining: defeat
perennial champion Mitchell College, who’ll be leaving the juco ranks after
this season for NCAA Division Three. CCRI and Mitchell, who’ve split this
season, clash on Feb. 19 in Warwick at 6:00 p.m. to conclude the regular
season. A win earns an automatic spot in the region championship on Sun.,
Feb. 29 in the playoffs hosted by CCRI.
The CCRI men (13-11 and 12-4 in NJCAA Region XXI) made
huge strides toward asserting themselves as one of the top teams in Division
Two after two sizzling wins over region foes last week.
On Thursday night, their 91-64 triumph over #13
nationally-ranked and defending champion Dean College (13-3) in Franklin,
Massachusetts was their first over the Bulldogs in four games. Dean also
sustained their first defeat in the region this year after 10 straight wins.
MD Mazique (Brooklyn, NY) had a career-high 36 points and 7 three-pointers
while Greg Simoneau (Warwick) added 22 points to help break open the game.
On Saturday afternoon the Knights clinched a region
playoff spot with a win, their third win in a row, with a decisive 95-71 win
over host Holyoke Community College. Greg Simoneau (Warwick) notched 28 to
lead all CCRI scorers and Oscar Smith (Memphis,TN) had 19 to lead four
players in double figures.
Simoneau, Smith and Mazique- all sophomore tri-captains-
remain amazingly close in scoring for the past two years as the trio
continue their collective climb toward the top 10 or higher. Indeed, all
three are in striking distance of 1,000 points for their career. Simoneau
now stands at 889 for 16th,, Smith at 857 (17th) , and
Mazique is in 19th. Only 8 CCRI players (men or women) have
scored 1,000 points or more for their career.

2004 Winter Homecoming Invitational- Women’s Division
The CCRI women had to settle for a split in the CCRI Winter
Homecoming Invitational, losing, 56-48, to #11 nationally-ranked Genesee
Community College, on Sunday. CCRI upended Mewrcer County CC, 80-74, on
Saturday.
Rebecca Haynes with 14 and Jamie Angell with 11 were in double
figures for the Knights, who had a five-game win streak snapped. Their
record is now 13-7.
Four players were in double figures for the Lady Vikings of Region
III, who improved to 14-1. Antonietta Young and Fifi Camara each had 15
with Latarra Odom adding 13 and Petra Kulhankova netting 10.
Genesee led for most of the game and opened up a 17-point lead midway
through the second half. The Lady Knights of NJCAA Region XXI narrowed
the deficit to sis in the final minute.

CCRI staged a late-minute comeback but fell, 69-66, to Genesee
Community College of NJCAA Region Three on Sunday in Warwick. CCRI
trailed by as much as 10 points with less than a minute left and crept
to within three with 2.2 seconds left on successive three-pointers by MD
Mazique. But they couldn’t posession for a final field goal attempt.
The Knights made just 5 of 15 free-throw attempts. Greg Simoneau had
a game-high 26 points to move up to 16th on the all-time CCRI
scoring list with 826 career points. Oscar Smith added 20 points for the
Knights, whose record is now even at 10-10. They split in the tourney,
having defeated Mercer County CC, 79-73, on Saturday. Their record is
now even at 10-10.
The Cougars were led by their backcourt combination of Don Juan Tyson
with 21 points and Phil Santiago, who netted 18. The Cougars won both
games in the tourney, including 103-68, against Mitchell College
earlier. Their record improved to 14-3.

MEN’S TEAM GOES
1-2 AND WOMEN’S TEAM IS 2-1 ON FLORIDA TRIP
WOMEN’S TEAM ALMOST CAPTURES ALL THREE GAMES ON TRIP
The CCRI women’s basketball squad achieved history by
winning two straight games against Division One opponents. First the Lady
Knights defeated Palm Beach CC, 57-55 and Miami-Dade CC, 57-48, before
succumbing to Broward CC, 58-53, in the last game. The Lady Knights, now 8-6
overall, have won half their games versus Division One teams (4-3), another
record for a season.
Sophomore forward Rebecca Haynes (Queensland,
Australia) made a driving left-handed layup to clinch the first game,
57-55, over Palm Beach CC, in an exciting come-from-behind win. The Lady
Knights went up, 9-1, then were blitzed, 29-17, to trail, 30-16, at
halftime.
But they staged an incredible comeback over the last five
minutes, outscoring the Lady, 18-5. Amanda Ward and Jamie Angell combined to
steal the ball to prevent a last shot by PBCC in the final seconds. Ruling
the backboards were Haynes with 13 rebounds and 3 blocks (and three steals)
and Roxanne Reid with 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Sara Duszkiewicz (S.
Kingstown) connected on 3-of-4 three-point attempts enroute to a
14-point outing.
The next game Lady Knights surprisingly shut down
Miami-Dade CC, 57-48. Just a month before MDCC had eked out a 71-69 victory
vs. CCRI, relying on their stars, Essence Greer with 31 points and
for 23 by Shavonder Clark for 70% of their offense. This contest took
an entirely different tone, however, as the two MDCC standouts were
handcuffed to combine for just 18 points, a whooping 35 less than they had
as a tandem before. Haynes had team-high totals of 12 points and two blocks
to go along with 10 rebounds while Carla Hands had 11 points on 5-of-7
shooting and contributed 6 rebounds. Roxanne Reid had an impressive effort
with 10 points, a game-high 13 rebounds along with nine points.
The Lady Knights weren’t quite as sharp the last game
against Broward CC. Hands had a double-double effort of 10 points and 11
rebounds and Reid added 11 points, including 7-of-8 from the foul line but
they were the only CCRI players in double figures.
During the three Florida games, there were excellent
overall efforts by several Lady Knights teammates, with four players
averaging 9 points or better.
Hands was the most effective shooter, averaging 9.6
ppg on 70% shooting (14-of-20).
Reid averaged a double-double overall with 10 points
and 10.7 rebounds per game.
Haynes led all rebounders with 11.3 rpg and averaged
9.0 ppg.
Sophomore guard Jamie Angell (Cranston, La Salle
Academy) averaged a team-high 3.3 assists.
Freshman center Nikki Dalton (Danbury,
CT) had a high game of seven rebounds
Sara Duszkiewicz had a 9.0 ppg average.
CCRI MEN’S SQUAD FINISHES WITH
THRILLING 80-77, OT WIN OVER BROWARD CC
The men’s squad finished on a real high note by rallying
to defeat Broward CC, 80-77, in overtime on Jan. 8. Sophomore forward
Greg Simoneau (Warwick) was outstanding, scoring 17 of his game-high 23
points in the second half of this victory, the first by a men’s squad over a
Division One team in over four years. Sophomore forward Vladimir
Khazanovitch (Orenburg, Russia) clinched the game with two free throws
with 17 seconds left.
It turned out to be an exciting conclusion with both team
unable to establish any solid leads, though BCC was ahead most of the game.
The nation’s leading rebounder (16.0 rpg) in Division One , BCC’s Adrian
Uter, a 6-5 center averaging 18.0 points per game and commited to
Hofstra University next year, wasn’t a factor at all, scoring only 8 points
before fouling out early in the second half.
The Knights finally tied the Broward contest late in the
second half and held on for a 77-77 tie at the end of regulation. In
overtime, sophomore guard MD Mazique (Brooklyn, NY) scored five of
his 17 points Sophomore forward Oscar Smith (Memphis, TN),
despite giving up four to six inches underneath, managed 14 points and
grabbed 14 rebounds before fouling out in overtime. Sophomore center
Louis-Patrick Levros (Montreal, Quebec/ Cranston HS East) had 13 points
and 4 rebounds before also fouling out.
The Knights first two games were losses, 82-75 to Palm
Beach CC, and 86-57 to Miami-Dade CC.
Against Palm Beach CC, Smith had his 11
double-double of the season accounting for 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Simoneau added 16 points, sophomore guards Pat O’Brien (Narragansett)
and Mazique (Brooklyn, NY) each had 12 and Levros had 11.
Versus Miami-Dade, the Knights always trailed. Only Smith
with 12 points, and Simoneau and O’Brien with 11 each, were effective
offensively for the Knights.
A bright note was the offensive balance displayed by the
squad. Four players averaged double figures and another almost did.
Simoneau averaged team-high totals of 16.7 ppg, 4.0
assists and 2.5 steals per game on the trip, and was selected as CCRI
Male Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. Now averaging
15.8 ppg for the season, he has scored 736 points in his career, 23rd on the
all-time list.
Smith, who’s averaging a double-double this year with
17.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game (one of very few CCRI players to ever
do so), averaged 16.0 points and a team-high 8.7 rebounds per game on the
trip. With 702 career points, he ranks 25th all-time. Mazique,
who averaged 10.3 ppg on the trip, now has 672 points, which is 27th
all-time.
O’Brien (Narragansett) shot a team-high 52% in his average of 11 ppg
on the trip. He also led the Knights in three-point shooting, making 5 of 11
(45%).
Finally, Levros averaged 10.7 points per outing
and 5.3 rebounds per game and 2.34 steals per contest. He’s averaging 10.1
ppg this season.

WOMEN'S AND MEN'S BASKETBALL LOSE TO BROWARD.....
CCRI women's basketball lost in its bid to take three straight in Florida, losing 53-58 to Broward
CC last night. The team moves to 8-6 overall.
The men's basketball team also lost 77-80 to Broward as well. The loss put the men's squad at
7-8 on the season.
Both teams return to Rhode Island on January 10, 2004.

LEAD WAY IN WIN AGAINST HOLYOKE AFTER HEARTBREAKING LOSS TO MITCHELL
On Thursday, the CCRI men’s basketball team lost one
of the most exciting games ever in CCRI basketball history at Mitchell
College in double overtime, 110-106, and then rebounded with an 80-65
win against Holyoke CC at home on Saturday this past week.
The Knights now are 7-5 overall and 1-3 against the
region’s Division Two foes.
Mitchell and CCRI were either tied or exchanged leads
numerous times throughout. Deadlocked, 41-41, at halftime, Mitchell
seemed to get an upper hand in the second half, leading 71-69, until
sophomore forward Greg Simoneau went on a 8-point binge in 43
seconds. That supreme effort vaulted the Knights ahead, 77-71, with
seven minutes left. But Mitchell quickly caught up and the game then
see-sawed back and forth in frantic style until the very end. The game
was tied, 86-86, after regulation and 96-96, after the first extra
session.
Mitchell finally prevailed, but not from lack of
effort by sophomore tri-captains MD Mazique (Brooklyn, NY),
Greg Simoneau (Warwick, RI) and Oscar Smith (Memphis,
TN). The trio accounted for 50 of the Knights 69 points
in the second half and two overtimes.
Mazique had career-best totals of 35 points and nine
three’s versus the Pequots.
Indeed, his 9 treys tied the second best total of
three-pointers in a game, the other being recorded by North Providence’s
Ken McDonald, who went on to play at Providence College. Mazique is
averaging 14.0 ppg, third best on the squad.
Simoneau, the team’s second leading scorer at 15.7
ppg, had an outstanding effort by registering an all-time personal high of 10 assists
and 8 rebounds.
Smith, the team’s leading scorer (19.9 ppg) and
rebounder at 10.5 rpg, had a double-digit night again, with 26 points
and 14 rebounds.
On Saturday at home versus the 1-11 Cougars of
Holyoke, the Knights weren’t nearly as sharp, despite being in control
most of the game. By containing Ray Carter, the Cougars leading scorer
entering the game (22.1) to just eight points, the Knights were never
seriously threatened.
Mazique, CCRI Male Athlete of the Week for his
two-game effort, led the way again in scoring with 21 points while
Simoneau was right behind with 20 points. Smith had 16 points.
Simoneau, Smith and Mazique are already well
established on CCRI’s all-time career scoring list and will soon be the
highest-scoring trio of any two-year teammates in CCRI’s 39-year
history.
Also having excellent games the past two contests was
6-5 sophomore forward Louis-Patrick Levros (Cranston, RI)
with 14 points and 14 rebounds against Mitchell College and 14 points
and 11 rebounds vs. Holyoke. He’s the most improved of all the sophomore
players thus far and is averaging 11.4 points per game.
Freshman point guard Ray Ross (Port Washington,
NY) chipped in with 10 points against Mitchell and six vs.
Holyoke and is displaying more and more floor leadership.
This will be the last home game for the men’s squad
until Jan. 17 when the Knights' men and women play the respective Monroe
College (Bronx, NY) squads. Both CCRI squads are now off until they play
in Florida in early January.

COUNTY CC (NJ), 57-53, AFTER PUTTING UP VALIANT FIGHT IN LOSING 63-62,
TO MITCHELL COLLEGE IN NEW LONDON, CT ON THURSDAY

(Baltimore, MD) had her best effort ever accounting for a
team-leading 14 points, freshman forward Rebecca Haynes (Queensland,
Australia) added 12 as five other Lady Knights had six or more
points in a 57-53 conquest over Union County College in Cranford, New
Jersey on Saturday.
CCRI had built up a 35-20 halftime lead and had to
stave off a furious rally by the host Lady Owls to register a victory
and lift them up to 6-5 for the season.
On Thursday, CCRI, already victorious over arch-rival
Mitchell College earlier in the season, had their last chance to emerge
with an historic first-ever win on Mitchell’s home floor on Thursday. Despite being consistently outrebounded
and trailing most of the contest, the Lady Knights managed to stay
close,
but fell just short, 63-62 at the final buzzer.
This was the last opportunity the Lady Knights had to
beat the Lady Pequots on their home floor. CCRI beat Mitchell last year
in Warwick for the first time in 23 years (47 games). But they never
have won on the Lady Pequots' home floor in New London in 24 years. Next
year Mitchell College moves to the NCAA Division III level.
However, CCRI likely has two more chances to defeat
Mitchell this year. They play the Lady Pequots on Feb. 19 in Warwick in
the last game of the regular season and should clash with them again
when CCRI hosts the NJCAA Region XXI Tournament from Feb. 28-29.

CCRI INDOOR TRACK SEASON
UNDERWAY
The CCRI men and women indoor track teams, who, in
their third year of the program, have a record-high total of 13 men and
11 women competing, got underway at the Wesleyan University Invitational
Meet in Middletown, Connecticut last Saturday.
Sophomore Orlagh Cullen (Offaly, Ireland)
captured the weight throw with a distance of 44 feet, 11 ½ inches and
was fifth in the shot put with a heave of 36 feet, 1 ½ inches. Cullen’s
achievements earned her CCRI Female Athlete of the Week.
Freshman All-American Erin Bailey (Attleboro,
MA) picked up where she left off in the cross country
season by recording an easy victory in the 3000-meter run. Her time of
11:29.54 was over 20 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
Sophomore Lawrence Aidoo (Ghana),
who also played on the men’s soccer team, had an excellent second-place
effort in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.70 seconds, just 0.05 seconds behind the winner,
Joseph Boaheng of Farmingdale State.
In the men’s weight throw, sophomore Jonathan
Reynolds (Cumberland) third-place finish of 41 feet, 5 ¼ inches set a
CCRI record.
Also setting a school record in the 600 meters with a
sixth-place time of 1:29.29 was freshman
Eric Estrada
(Providence, RI).

The CCRI men’s and women’s basketball
squads have some key early-season match-ups this week.
Tonight (Tues.) the CCRI men, (5-4 and
4-2 in the region) losers of their last two games, face
Gateway CC and then travel to their prime adversary
Mitchell College in New London, CT for a doubleheader,
with the CCRI men’s and women’s teams both playing strong
Pequots squads. On Saturday, the men conclude their first
semester by hosting Holyoke CC starting at 1:00 p.m. Youth
club members will be admitted free if program directors
call in advance (825-1132).
6-5 sophomore center Louis-Patrick
Levros of Cranston had the hot hand (15 points)
against Massasoit CC last week, but the Knights faltered
down the stretch to lose in Brockton, Mass., 72-61. Levros
was named CCRI Male Athlete of the Week for his excellent
effort.
The CCRI women (5-4, 2-0 in the region)
barely lost, 71-69, to host Miami-Dade Community College
in the finals of the Miami-Dade Invitational Tournament
held in Florida last weekend. It was a marked contrast to
last year’s contests against Division One teams in which
they were 1-7 and lost by an average of 20 points. The
Lady Knights had a 1-2 record in the tourney, defeating
Seminole CC, 60-58, and losing to Broward CC, 60-48, in
the first game. ``Outside of the region playoffs, this is
the best we’ve played against such high-caliber teams,’’
said head coach Steve Ceseretti. Sara
Duszkiewicz (sophomore guard, S. Kingstown) was
our strongest offensive player and Rebecca Haynes (sophomore
forward, Queensland, Australia) our most consistent
defensive player,’’ he added. Duszkiewicz and Haynes
shared CCRI Female Athlete of the Week honors.
After playing Mitchell College (whom
they’ve beaten once this year) on Thursday, the CCRI women
finish their first semester schedule by traveling to Union
County College of Cranford, NJ, a Division Two opponent.
POST-SEASON HONORS FOR CCRI
WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM
Six members of the CCRI women’s soccer
team, runner-up in the NJCAA National Women’s Soccer
Division One Championship, once again have received
several post-season awards.
For the second year in a row, sophomore
forwards Katie Leahy of Warwick and Erica
Rico of Cranston were named First Team
All-Americans by the National Junior College Athletic
Association and National Soccer Coaches Association.
Sophomore goalie Alex Rothemich
of North Scituate was a NJCAA and NSCAA Second-Team
All-American.
Sophomore defender Jessica Insana
(Warwick) was a NSCAA Second-Team All-American and an
NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American.

CCRI MEN’S AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAMS
OFF TO WINNING STARTS
The CCRI basketball teams currently both have winning
records.
The men’s squad is currently 5-3.
Leading scorers thus far are 6-2 sophomore Oscar Smith
(20.0 ppg) , who also leads the squad in rebounds (11.3
rpg) and in shooting percentage; 6-3 forward Greg Simoneau,
sophomore, Warwick, 15.3 ppg; Pat O’Brien, sophomore,
Narragansett, 11.0 ppg and MD Mazique, 6-6 sophomore
guard, Brooklyn, NY, 10.7 ppg.
The Knights leader in assists is Ray Ross, Jr., Port
Washington, NY, 6-2 freshman guard with 3.6 apg.
The CCRI women, also in NJCAA Division Two, currently
are 4-2 and on a three-game win streak. Idle since a 74-48
win over Division One Globe Institute of Technology on
Nov. 22, they are preparing for a trip to Florida to play
three games in the Miami-Dade Invitational against all
Division One teams this weekend.
Their leading scorers in an exceptionally well-balanced
attack are: 5-9 freshman guard Amanda Ward, Hartford, CT,
and Roxanne Reid, 5-9 soph. forward, Cambridge, Ontario,
Canada, both at 10.0 ppg; Jamie Angell, 5-5 soph. guard,

The men’s basketball team (3-1, 3-0 in the region)
has a three-game win streak after last week’s action.
The Knights, ranked #13 in the NJCAA Division Two
pre-season poll won, 108-97, over UConn-Avery Point spearheaded by the
24-point, 10-for-15 shooting by 6-3 sophomore forward Greg Simoneau
(Warwick Vets) and five other players in double
figures in its home opener. (Simoneau was mentioned as a
pre-season All-American selection along with teammate Oscar Smith)
Then they put the clamps on Quinsigamond CC, 91-76,
on Saturday behind a sterling performance by 6-5 sophomore
forward Louis-Patrick Levros (Cranston HS East), who
scored a career-high 21 points on 5-of-10 shooting, 10-of-13 free-throw
shooting and six rebounds.
Thus far, the Knights have four players in double
figures: 6-2 sophomore forward Oscar Smith (Memphis, TN),
20.0 ppg and a team-leading 10.0 rebounds per game; Greg Simoneau,
16.7 ppg; 6-1 sophomore guard Pat O’Brien (Narragansett),
11.8 ppg and 6-2 freshman guard Ray Ross, Jr. (Port Washington,
NY), 10.3 ppg. 6-6 sophomore guard MD Mazique (Bronx, NY)
and Levros are both averaging 9.8 ppg. Smith leads the squad in
steals with 9 while Mazique and O’Brien both have 8. Smith leads the
team in field-goal percentage with 65.0 with Simoneau at 61.5%.
The Knights play Dean College tomorrow night (Tues.,
Nov. 18) at 8 p.m. in a doubleheader that also features the women
playing at 6:00 p.m. It’s anticipated there will be a large crowd due to
the interest generated by having so many RI All-Division All-Staters
playing against a former rival- West Warwick All-Stater Stace Garrick
of West Warwick, a 6-2 freshman guard who plays for Dean College.
Greg Simoneau was named CCRI Male Athlete of the
Week for outstanding performances in the last two wins. He scored 24
points in the win over UConn-Avery Point and in the last two games has
made 15 of 25 shots.
The Division Two Lady Knights had an easy time with
Hudson Valley CC of Troy, NY, an NJCAA Division Three club, 87-35, on
Sunday in Warwick. They evened their record at 2-2. Eight players scored
six or more points, paced by 5-10 sophomore guard Amanda Ward,
(East Hartford, CT ), 15 points and 14 points by 5-9
sophomore forward Roxanne Reid (Cambridge, Ontario, Canada),
14 points and a game-high seven rebounds; and 14 points, including two
three-pointers by 5-5 sophomore point guard Jamie Angell (Cranston,
La Salle Academy).
For the first time ever, the Knights have been ranked
ahead (#15) of #Mitchell College (#16) in the NJCAA pre-season poll.
Indeed the Lady Knights have already beaten Mitchell, 73-61, for the
second time ever in their history.
The leading Knights scorers thus far are: Angell,
12.0 ppg; Reid, 10.8 ppg, Ward, 8.5 ppg; 6-2
freshman guard/forward Rebecca Haynes (Queensland, Australia),
8.2 ppg, 6-3 sophomore center Carla Hands (Boston, MA),
6.8 ppg and 5-11 sophomore guard Sara Duszkiewicz (S. Kingstown
HS), 6.0 ppg.
Leading in assists are 5-8 freshman guard Jeannell
Hughes (Severn, MD) and Angell with 1.75 apg.
Steals leaders are Duszkiewicz and Haynes
with 7 each for an average of 1.75 per game.
Leading rebounders are Reid, 7.0 ppg and
Haynes and Hands, 5.4 rpg.
The CCRI men’s and women’s teams play Dean College
clubs on Tuesday, Nov. 18. The women play at 6:00 p.m. followed by the
men at 8 p.m. The women’s game should also spark interest as 5-3
freshman guard Danielle Clark and 6-2 freshman center Nicole
(Providence, Central HS) both play for Dean College.
Roxanne Reid was named CCRI Female Athlete
of the Week. The sophomore co-captain is currently leading the
team in scoring (10.8 ppg) and in rebounding (7.0 rpg).
The team is coached by Steve Ceseretti of
Warwick, in his first year of head coach. Assistants include
Claudia DeFaria, (Central Falls), a former CCRI
All-American; Rob McClanaghan of Cranston, a
physical education teacher at Bishop Hendricken HS where he played as an
All-Division athlete under Ceseretti at Bishop Hendricken HS
and went on to play at Syracuse University and volunteer assistant
Kate Fuoroli of Warwick, a teacher in Warwick
and a former athlete at Pilgrim High School and

DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION CCRI WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM ADVANCES TO
NATIONALS FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW; DEFEATS MONROE CC, 4-2, AT
NORTHEAST DISTRICT PLAYOFFS IN ROCHESTER, NY
Ignited by the five-goal effort of sophomore forward
Katie Leahy, the CCRI women’s soccer team will get another chance to
defend their NJCAA Division One junior college national title after
defeating Briarcliffe College, 5-0, and Monroe Community College, 4-2,
on Sunday at the NJCAA Northeast District playoffs in Rochester, NY last
weekend.
The Lady Knights, 15-2-1 and ranked #5 nationally,
will now play in the eight-team NJCAA Division One National Championship
Tournament at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix, Arizona. The
pairings and times will be determined soon (www.njcaa.org).
On Saturday, the Lady Knights had a relatively easy
time with Briarcliffe as Leahy had two goals and an assist with Orlagh
Cullen (Ireland) also adding two goals and Abby Hummel (Warwick)
adding another. Goalie Alana Bouley (Attleboro, MA) had three
saves.
The district championship game vs. Monroe, six-time
national champion (who were defeated last year in the national
championship game by CCRI), once again featured the prolific scoring of
Leahy, who tallied three more goals. The game-clinching goal of the
contest was by Abby Hummel, a freshman midfielder who played Toll
Gate High School. Leahy’s last goal provided some breathing room for
the Lady Knights.
CCRI outshot Monroe, 21-8, with sophomore goalie Alex
Rothemich (N. Scituate) making five saves, including one sequence
when she made three lightning-quick saves in a row in the second half.
Rothemich has allowed 8 goals in 10 games with seven shutouts for a 0.80
goals-against average, ranking 10th nationally. Bouley, a
freshman keeper, has recorded four shutouts and allowed 10 goals in 8
games for a 1.25 goals-against average.
Leahy now has 37 goals and 7 assists for 81 points,
sixth nationally. For her career she has 91 goals and 15 assists for 197
points. Other leading scorers are: Erica Rico (Cranston), 13 goals and
14 assists, 40 points; Orlagh Cullen (Ireland) with 10 goals and
15 assists, and Kara Hurston, West Warwick, 12 gls. and 11
assists, 35 pts., Hummel, 10 gls and 6 asts., 26 pts.
In four years, head Coach Dennis Grassini (Warwick),
along with his assistant, former CCRI All-American goalie Kathy Bannan (N.
Kingstown) has guided the squad to a 70-9-1 record overall, with
three straight NJCAA Region XXI championships, two Northeast District
titles and a national title last season with a perfect record of 22-0-0.

The CCRI men’s cross country squad finished seventh
with 196 points in the NJCAA Division Three National Men’s Cross Country
Championships held at Cobleskill, New York last Saturday. Southwestern
Indian Polytech Institute (NM) was first with 35 points.
Sophomore Keith Jobin (Jamestown, N. Kingstown
HS), who finished as the first CCRI runner in every meet this
year, was the first Knights runner again, coming in 41st with
a time of 31: 39. His time of 29:27 on the CCRI five-mile course was 13th
nationally.
Freshman Tristan Fraser (Blackstone-Millville
(MA) Regional HS) almost nipped Jobin at the wire, placing 43rd
in 31:41. Other finishers included: sophomore Glenn Sharpe (N.
Attleboro), 46, 32:08; sophomore Jason Andrade (Warwick
Vets), 56, 33:21; sophomore Robert Teple (Warwick Vets HS),

CCRI WOMEN SPARKED BY ERIN BAILEY’S
SECOND-PLACE FINISH
In the women’s race, also held at Cobleskill, Erin
Bailey’s all-time best effort in a national, a second-place time of
22:53, paced the women, just 18 seconds off the winning pace.. Bailey, a
freshman from Attleboro, had the nation’s sixth-best time
of 21:01 this year on a three-mile course. Freshman Erica Hird
(Providence, La Salle Academy), was 26th in 25:44.
Hird had the third best time in the country this year (20:41.) Sophomore
Jen Simas (Cranston, La Salle Academy) was 48th
in 29:15 and freshman Meg McDonnell (Warwick, Pilgrim HS)
placed 65th in 33:33.

The CCRI men’s cross country team finished first by a
comfortable margin in winning their first Northeast NJCAA District Division
Three Championships at Williams Free Trade School in Media, Pennsylvania on
Saturday. CCRI, ranked #7 nationally, had 36 points, far ahead of
second-place Suffolk CC (NY) with 56 and the rest of the six-team field.
Meanwhile, freshman Erica Hird (Providence, La
Salle Academy) and freshman Erin Bailey of
Attleboro(Attleboro HS), were second and third,
respectively in the women’s three-mile race. Hird’s time of 23:22 was just
11 seconds off the winning time. Bailey crossed the line in a time of 24:19.
Other CCRI finishers were Jen Simas (Cranston), 8th, 27:14 and
Meg McDonnell (Warwick), 12th, 29:08.
Keith Jobin of Jamestown (N. Kingstown HS),
the frontrunner all season for the Knights, set the pace again with a 4th-place
finish overall in 31:27 on a very difficult course. Jobin was named CCRI
Male Athlete of the Week for the second time this fall.
Jobin has the 13th best time in the country at
29:27.
Three teammates came within two minutes of Jobin:
Glenn Sharpe (N. Attleboro), 7th, 32:07; Tristan
Fraser (Blackstone, MA), 8th, 32:08 and Erik Estrada
(Providence), 11th, 33:15. Other finishers included sophomore

MEN’S SOCCER SEASON ENDS WITH
1-0 LOSS TO GLOBE INSTITUTE ON SAT.
The conclusion of the season for the CCRI men’s soccer
team came against the Globe Institute of Technology (NY) Knights in a 1-0
loss on Saturday in the NJCAA Region XXI Championship. The Knights of CCRI
had difficulty penetrating the defense of the Manhattan-based Knights squad
which then went on to qualify7 for the Northeast District playoffs in Sunday
by defeating Dean College, 2-1.
The team finished at 10-3-3, the best winning percentage
since 1998, when they were 14-2.
Named to the NJCAA All-Region XXI squad were Daniel
Cooney, sophomore midfielder, Newport, RI (Brewster Academy); Hernan
Cumplido, sophomore forward, Pawtucket (Tolman HS; Bruno Vaz, freshman
defender, Pawtucket (Shea HS) . Honorable mention selections were Chris
Wordell, Little Compton (Middletown HS) and Bruno Texeira (Pawtucket, Shea
HS).
WOMEN’S SOCCER SQUAD READY TO DEFEND NATIONAL TITLE AS THEY PREPARE FOR
NJCAA NORTHEAST DISTRICT FOUR-TEAM PLAYOFF.
The defending national champion CCRI women’s soccer
squad, ranked #5 nationally with a record of 13-2-1, will participate in the
upcoming NJCAA Northeast District Division One playoffs on Nov. 8 and 9 at
Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY.
The district champion will advance to the National
Championships to be held at Paradise Valley CC in Arizona from November
20-23.
Thus far, sophomore All-American forward Katie Leahy
(Warwick) is the top scorer with 32 goals and 6 assists for 70 points,
ranking 10th nationally. Erica Rico (Cranston), another sophomore
All-American forward, like last year is the team’s second leading scorer
with 13 gls. and 13 asts. for 39 pts. and is tied for 30th
nationally. The next best scorers are freshman forward Kara Hurston (West
Warwick) with 12 goals, 9 assists for 33 points, #38 nationally and
sophomore midfielder Orlagh Cullen (Ireland), 8 goals, 14 assists for 30
points, 45th nationally.
Freshman midfielder Abby Hummel (Warwick, Toll Gate HS) ,
whose all-around outstanding play helped clinch their third region title in
a row, 3-0, over Mitchell College, was named as CCRI Female Athlete of the
Week.
Goaltending duties have been shared between Alex
Rothemich (North Scituate) and freshman Alana Bouley (Attleboro, MA).
Rothemich continues to be one of the nation’s leading goaltenders. In nine
games, the sophomore All-American has allowed just six goals, made 33 saves,
and recorded seven shutouts. She is tied for 9th nationally with
a 0.67 goals against average. Bouley has been nearly as effective in seven
games, permitting only ten goals, with 22 saves and three shutouts.

CCRI Women’s Soccer streak officially ends
The CCRI women’s soccer all-time unbeaten streak of 34 games over the
past two seasons- the best in the 39-year history of sports at the
institution- has come to an end.
The Lady Knights were shut out by the same score, 5-0, in successive
games, by Long Beach City (CA) College and host Dixie State College in
St. George, Utah, last Friday and Saturday. The NJCAA national defending
champion were a perfect 22-0-0 last season and now stand at 11-2-1 this
year. They surrendered their top spot in the NJCAA and NSCAA
polls for the first time in over a year.
Long Beach, which has lost just once this year to an Argentina junior
squad, was ranked #1 last year along with CCRI in the Division One of
the NSCAA but now ranked #1 in NSCAA’s Division Three (non-scholarship
schools). Their record overall now stands at 10-1.
Dixie State College, #3 in the last NJCAA and NSCAA polls, has a
record of 11-4-1.
Women’s Volleyball
The CCRI Women’s Volleyball team split four contests last week. They
won in five combined straight games vs. Leslie and Mitchell College
before losing two close contests to defending region champion Dean
College. Their record improved to 16-13 overall and 4-3 in the region.
Mitchell, Dean and CCRI will play on Saturday and Sunday in the Region
XXI tournament at Dean College in Franklin, MA. The winner advances to
the Northeast District Tournament on November 1 and 2 at the site of the
Region III or XIX winner.
LaRae Rhodes outstanding play earned her CCRI Female Athlete of the
Week. Rhodes, a 6’1" freshman middle hitter from Warwick (Pilgrim HS),
is now ranked #3 in the country in blocks with 1.6 per game and also
ranks in other following categories nationally: kills per game, 16th,
3.7; hitting efficiency, 29th, 32.7% and digs per game, 34th,
3.6.
Other national leaders in various categories include Megan Hickey
(Cumberland), digs per game, 7th, 4.9 and aces per game, 43rd,
0.7; Lisa Vitiello (Walpole, MA), assists per game, 34th,
6.7; Daphney Gabriel (Central Falls), aces per game, 47th,
0.6 and digs per game, 38th, 3.7.
Men’s Soccer
The Men’s Soccer team improved their record to 8-2-2 on Monday with a
1-0 victory over Holyoke CC. Freshman midfielder Sury Moreira (Central
Falls) scored on a breakaway on an assist from another Central Falls
teammate Mario Miranda, a sophomore forward. Sophomore goalie Chris
Wordell (Little Compton), who ranks 8th in the country in
goalkeeping, made seven saves for his fourth shutout this season.
Men’s & Women’s Cross Country
The CCRI women’s cross country team is ranked 3rd
nationally, which is the highest ranking ever for women’s cross country
at CCRI. Erica Hird (Providence) and Erin Bailey (Attleboro, MA) are
nationally ranked, 3rd and 5th respectively, for
their best individual times.
The men’s cross country team is currently ranks 8th
nationally. Top runners include #12 ranked Keith Jobin (Jamestown),
Tristan Fraser (Blackstone, MA), 22nd, and Glenn Sharpe (North
Attleboro, MA), 24th.

Cross Country (Women Ranked 5th in the
Country, Men Ranked 8th)
Despite a shower and a rain-soaked course at the
CCRI-Flanagan campus in Lincoln, many CCRI runners (Women currently
ranked 5th in the Country) still achieved season-best times at the
Tri-State Invitational Meet hosted by CCRI on Saturday. And two CCRI
runners were accordingly named as Athletes of the Week.
On the three-mile women’s course, run mostly in
soaking rain, freshmen Erin Bailey(currently 5th in the country) and
Erica Hird (currently 3rd in the country) finished in the top 10 against
75 competitors from four-year colleges. Bailey (Attleboro, MA) named as
CCRI Female Co-Athlete of the Week, came in 8th at 20:40,
just 20 seconds out of fourth place. Hird (Providence) was 10th
in 21:00. Crystal Choquette (Warwick) was 24th in 22:15, Jen
Simas (Cranston), 52, 24:19 and Jessica Lee (Cranston), 68, 27:19. The
women’s squad came in sixth out of 9 teams with a score of 140 points.
Bridgewater State College led the women with 54 points. The winner in
record-smashing time was Worcester State College’s Olivia Patch in a
blistering 19:03, 35 seconds ahead of the next competitor.
The CCRI men amassed 154 points, finishing 8th
competing against 11 four-year schools. Placing first for the first time
in the Tri-State Invitational history was the Rhode Island College men’s
team with 46 points. Eric Lonergan of RIC was second. The first men’s
finisher was Ryan Jones of Navy Prep.
Among 97 male competitors, CCRI sophomore Keith Jobin
(Jamestown) came in 20th overall on the 5-mile course, with a
time of 29:28, just one second off his personal best in junior college.
Jobin was named CCRI Male Athlete of the Week.

Women’s Volleyball
On Sat. Oct. 11, the CCRI women’s volleyball team will
be hosting its biggest tourney ever, inviting nine teams from three
states, including Morton College all the way from Cicero, Illinois,
outside Chicago.
The women’s volleyball team is currently 10-10 and
3-1 in the region. They traveled to upstate New York last weekend
winning against Corning CC and losing to Mohawk Valley CC and then
against nationally- ranked Onondaga CC twice, but by only the
respectable scores of 27-30 and 22-30 in the final match. The leading
players in each category for CCRI women’s volleyball players are:

The Community College of Rhode Island Lady Knights
(10-0-1), the nation’s #1 junior college women’s soccer team, is
preparing for #3 and unbeaten Young Harris College of Georgia (10-0)
this Saturday at 1 p.m. in Lincoln, after overwhelming #14 CCBC-Catonsville
(MD), 9-3, and Mercer County CC (NJ), 5-0, at home during last weekend.
Sophomore forward Katie Leahy (Warwick) led the way
against the Lady Cardinals of Catonsville, scoring four times, including
three in the second half, against the Lady Cardinals. She has 25 goals
and 6 assists, is the fourth-leading scorer nationally and was named
CCRI Female Co-Athlete of the Week. Warwick’s freshman midfielder, Abby
Hummel- the former Toll Gate multi-sport star athlete, had a superb game
against Mercer CC, scoring her first junior college hat trick-three
goals- in the shutout victory. Hummel has 7 goals and 5 assists for 19
points, fifth best on the team. Versus Catonsville, sophomore
All-American midfielder Orlagh Cullen from Ireland accomplished a rare
feat in one game- scoring twice on direct kicks from 18 yards or more.
She has 5 goals and 14 assists for 24 points. The Lady Knights have two
other double-digit scorers: sophomore All-American forward Erica Rico
(Cranston), 11 goals and 7 assists, 30 points and freshman Kara Hurston
(West Warwick). Young Harris, whom the Lady Knights defeated last year
in the national playoffs, has the nation’s top two scorers. They are
averaging over 10 goals per game.
Against two other #15 top-ranked teams thus far, CCRI
has defeated #15 Anne Arundel CC (MD) and tied #2 Monroe CC (NY), 1-1.
Men’s Soccer
At 6-1-2 and 3-1-2 in the region, the men’s soccer
squad, which hasn’t lost (includes two ties) in six games, is also
entering the home stretch of its schedule. With the Knights tying #8
nationally-ranked Massasoit CC last week on a goal by their leading
scorer sophomore forward Hernan Cumplido (Central Falls), an assist by
freshman midfielder Jason Melo ((Warwick) and 8 saves by sophomore
goalie Chris Wordell, (Little Compton) in Brockton, Mass. last week,
they have a chance to sneak into the national rankings this week.

important Region XXI matchup. The CCRI men played the CCRI alumni on
Sunday, defeating the former Knights stars, 6-2.
Baseball Cardi Classic
The battle for baseball’s unofficial college state
championship in Rhode Island starts Wednesday in the annual Cardi’s
Furniture Fall Baseball Classic. (NOTE: Please refer to attached fall
baseball roster for your local athletes on CCRI roster). Participating
are defending champion Bryant College, Roger Williams University,
Johnson & Wales University, Rhode Island College, Salve Regina
University and CCRI.

Women’s Volleyball
The Lady Knights (7-2, 3-1 in the region) are
currently on a tear. Their impressive 12-game and four-match win streak
came last week on the road in contests versus Mitchell College,
Western New England College, Leslie College and Holyoke CC. Navy will be
looking for vengeance tonight (Tuesday) against CCRI in Newport since
the Lady Knights eked out a 2-1 victory over the NAPsters in Lincoln on
Sept. 13. Meghan Hickey (Cumberland) is #4 nationally in aces with
1.0 per game and in digs with 4.4 per game. Setter Lisa Vitiello
(Walpole, MA) was 24th nationally and has a superb .989 serve
percentage. Freshman middle hitter LaRae Rhodes (Warwick,
Pilgrim HS) is the team leader in kills with 3.1 per game.
Women’s Soccer
The defending national champion CCRI Lady Knights had
a few streaks broken but are likely to retain their #1 status
nationally as they battled #2 Monroe CC on Saturday in Rochester, NY, to
a 1-1 tie in two overtimes. (Monroe, six-time national champion, lost
twice to CCRI last season, including in the national championship
finale.) Down 1-0, CCRI tied the score two-thirds of the way through the
second half when freshman forward Kara Hurston (West Warwick.) scored
with an assist from freshman midfielder Misa Dellay (East Greenwich).
The tie ended the team’s consecutive win streak at
27, placing them second all-time in CCRI sports history. But with the
team not losing in 28 games over the past two seasons, that ties them
with the baseball team (winners of 28 straight in 1988) for most
consecutive games without a loss. All-American Katie Leahy
had her all-time career goal-scoring streak of 26 games finally halted
on Saturday. She ranks #9 nationally thus far with 29 points.
Kara Hurston now has 18 points while sophomore forward Erica Rico, the
team’s second leading scorer last year has 17, and both are among the
nation’s top 30 scorers. Sophomore All-American goalie Alex
Rothemich (N. Scituate, Ponaganset HS) shined by making 10 saves in the
tie against Monroe.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer squad is off to an excellent 3-1-1
start following a 1-1, double-overtime tie with Dean College in New
London, Connecticut on Thursday, Sept.18 and a 2-1 triumph over
Springfield Tech. CC on Saturday. In the win over Springfield,
sophomore midfielder Daniel Cooney (Newport), Male Co-Athlete of the
Week, and freshman defender Nivaldo Rocha (Central Falls) recorded their
first goals ever for CCRI. Cooney, dominant all over midfield, delivered
on a penalty kick. The other CCRI Male Co-Athlete of the Week is
freshman goalie Zach Panchley (Cumberland), who, in his debut, had five
saves to earn the win. Sophomore defender Mario Miranda, who
had an assist, is the team’s leading scorer with two goals and one
assist for five points. The squad is one of seven honorable
mention teams listed in the most recent NJCAA poll after the top 15.
Sophomore goalie Christopher Wordell (Little Compton, Middletown HS) is
9th nationally in goals allowed per game with an average of 0.75. He has
made 35 saves.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
In two meets thus far, freshman Erica Hird
(Providence, La Salle Academy) followed her second-place debut on
September 11th at CCRI with a scintillating time of 20:56 at the
UMass-Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 20, placing 16th among four-year
college runners. That earned Hird the CCRI Female Athlete of the Week
award in the third week of action. Erin Bailey (Attleboro, MA)
also had an excellent performance. The freshman runner came in
26th overall with a time of 21:25. Sophomore Keith Jobin
(Jamestown, N. Kingstown HS) led the way for the men at the
UMass-Dartmouth Invitational. His time of 29:27 placed him 35th overall.
The second Knight runner was freshman Eric Estrada (Providence, Mt
Pleasant HS) in a time of 32:12.
