Knights Golfers Fall Short in Region XXI Tournament with Valiant Effort!

Going into day two the Knights were trailing Holyoke Community College by ten strokes. The Knights came out firing on day two as they cut ten strokes off their day one score however it was not good enough. The Knights fired a day two score of 330 matching Holyoke’s 330. Holyoke took the Region XXI championship by ten stokes 660 to 670 followed by Dean College 740 and Springfield Tech CC 748.

Conditions were much more conducive for scoring as compared to day one giving the leaders a chance to cut numerous shots off of their day one numbers. The CCRI Knights’ James Bonas (Newport, RI) finished in second place by shooting a two day total of 155 finishing three shots behind the medalist. Bonas shot a 75 (+3) on Wednesday, cutting five strokes off and in doing so qualified for the All-Region XXI team. Finishing in a tie for third and also qualifying for All-Region team was sophomore Andrew Bernardo (Warwick, RI) who shot a day two score of 77. Andrew was able to knock eight strokes off of his day one score and finished the tournament with a score of 162. Rounding out the scoring for the Knights were Matt Conway (Warwick, RI) who shot a two day total of 176 and George Gingell (Warwick, RI) who shot a 177.

Head Coach Rich Marchetti said after the round. “It was a great effort by our players. At our team meeting prior to the second round, we all set goals for the day’s round and the players were right on target. With only four players available and every shot counting I am extremely proud of our team’s effort and how determined our players were.”

Dan DeLuca Wins for Knights Giving Them Five Points at Tennis Nationals!

After the complete rainout on Tuesday of the 2008 NJCAA Men's Tennis Nationals, play was scheduled to resume on Wednesday at 8:00 with a couple of modifications. In the interest of time, the third set in main draw matches was changed to a super tiebreak or a match tiebreak as it is known - 1st to 10 points by two rather than the traditional 12-point tie-break - 1st to seven by two. Additionally, all back draw (consolation round) contests would go to 8-game pro-sets. The intention for the day was to get through two full rounds of singles matches and one round of doubles.

Mother Nature however had alternate plans again. Rain delayed the start of the second day from 8:00am to 11:30 and further changes were made. The back draw was scrapped, and all doubles matches up to the finals were changed to 8-game pro-sets. As many DIII coaches had plans to return home on Thursday, our tournament site made the additional change of getting two full rounds of singles and two full rounds of doubles.

Dan DeLuca (Warwick, RI) started CCRI's day off right beating Alejandro Valencia for the second time this year in as many meetings 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8 in the match tiebreak). The win, combined with the 1st round #1 doubles victory by Dan and his brother Joe, secured five points for CCRI, the most in at least three years of competition at the tournament. With the back draw cancelled, five points could have served as a great springboard to additional success, but that wasn't in the cards for the Knights this year.

Sam Jones (New London, CT) lost his flight #5 singles quarterfinal match to Jason Bielski of Mercer County CC (New Jersey) 6-0 and 6-0. Dan DeLuca (Warwick, RI) lost his semi-final round flight #2 singles match to top seeded Maksim Vergazov of Kingsborough CC (Brooklyn, NY), 6-1, 6-2. Both doubles teams suffered identical 8-0 losses - flight #2 featured Nate York (Greenville, RI) and Chris Izzo (Warwick, RI) losing to Suffolk CC (Long Island, NY) and flight #1 featured the DeLucas succumbing to Ross Armstrong and Farid Vatan, 1/2 of the team that had beaten the DeLucas in March.

Head Coach John Panzica commented after the matches “All-in-all it was a successful trip for CCRI tennis. We built some success out of a couple of years of less-than-stellar performances, and built a number of alliances that should help our program compete next year and for years to come.”

Knights in Second Place after Day one at Region XXI Golf Tournament!

After day one of the Region XXI golf tournament at Westover Country Club the CCRI Knights golf team is in second place with a score of 340. The day one leader was host school Holyoke Community College who shot a team score of 330. Rounding out the top four schools were Dean College who shot 378, and Springfield Tech CC who shot 379.

Westover Country Club is a par 72 course that is playing at a good distance of 6,700 yards. According to Head Coach Rich Marchetti the course is playing very difficult with its slick and fast greens. To make it even harder coach Marchetti said the pin positions were in extremely difficult spots on the greens.

The Knights were led by their team MVP, Freshmen James Bonas (Newport, RI) who shot a team low and third place score of 80. Bonas is four shots behind the leader and one shot out of second place. Also in the hunt for the Knights were freshmen Matt Conway (Warwick, RI) and Sophomore Andrew Bernardo (Warwick, RI) who each shot an 85. The 85 puts Conway and Bernardo in a four way tie for fifth place. This was Matt Conway’s lowest round of the year. Rounding out the scoring for the Knights was freshmen George Gingell (Warwick, RI) who shot a 90.

Coach Marchetti said after Round one, “If Matt Conway can duplicate his score from Tuesday and the rest of the team can shave a few strokes of their score we have a great opportunity to over come the 10 stroke deficit and become Region XXI champions.”

Day Two of the 2008 Men's Tennis Nationals Rained Out!

Light rain at 8:00am CST in the morning forced a delay as the courts became too dangerous to play on. Play was suspended until 1:00pm. From there play actually resumed around 12:30, only to be suspended before anyone had gotten a single game completed as rain began again in earnest. Play was then cancelled for the day. They will try to start again Wednesday morning.

Doubles Team of DeLuca and DeLuca only Bright Spot Day one at Tennis Nationals!

The CCRI Knights men’s tennis team is competing at NJCAA Division III Tennis Nationals at Collin CC in Plano, TX. The Knights were scheduled for four matches on Day one including: flight one singles Nate York (Greenville, RI) versus Nate Munier from the College of DuPage, flight three singles Joe DeLuca (Warwick, RI) versus Cole Jensen from Northeast CC, flight four singles Chris Izzo (Warwick, RI) versus Rogello Gutierrez from Kingsborough CC, and flight one doubles Joe and Dan DeLuca (Warwick, RI) versus Bobby Price and Jesus Roman from Rock Valley College.

The Knights’ only victory came in their last match of the day which was in flight one doubles with the team of Dan and Joe DeLuca defeating the team of Bobby Price and Jesus Roman from Rock Valley College 7-6 (4) and 6-3. The Deluca’s battled tough to win the first set going to tie-breaker but came out on top and then were able to get a couple breaks in the second set to secure the victory. The DeLuca’s will now face the third seeded team of Ross Armstrong and Farid Vatan from Montgomery-Rockville at noon EST on Tuesday. The DeLuca’s faced a team from Montgomery-Rockville earlier in the season but it was Ross Armstrong and Alejandro Valencia they came up just short in that match but look to improve this time day two at the Nationals.

On the singles side in flight one singles Nate York lost the “Battle of the Nates” with Nate Munier from the College of DuPage 6-1 and 6-1. In flight three singles Joe DeLuca fell to Cole Jensen from Northeast CC in a very close three set match 6-3, 4-6 and 6-4 in the closest singles match of the day for the Knights. Finally, in flight four singles Chris Izzo succumbed to Rogello Gutierrez from Kingsborough CC 6-2 and 6-3. All three of these Knights’ singles players will now move to the consolation bracket.

Still yet to play for the Knights are flight two singles Dan DeLuca who will face Alejandro Valencia from Montgomery-Rockville at 11:30 am EST Tuesday, Flight five singles Sam Jones (New London, CT) who will face Jason Bielski from Mercer County CC at 10:15 am EST on Tuesday and the flight two doubles team of Chris Izzo and Nate York will face Kyle Barnett and John Funk from Suffolk County CC at noon EST Tuesday.

Kelley and Sylvestre shine at the Track and Field National Championships!

This weekend the CCRI Knights and Lady Knights Track and Field teams finished their season in a big way by competing at the NJCAA Division III National Championships at SUNY-Delhi in New York. Just like in the regular season the Knights and Lady Knights were led by their MVP’s Amanda Kelley (Cumberland, RI) for the Lady Knights and James Sylvestre (Lincoln, RI) for the Knights.

Amanda Kelley led the Lady Knights finishing in the top two in all throwing events she started by winning the Javelin with a throw of 33.40m giving her First Team All-American then Kelley finished second in the Shot Put with a throw of 11.51m. Amanda wasn’t done there as she also finished second in the Hammer with a throw of 41.75m and then finished off the Nationals by finishing second in the Discus with a throw of 36.05m. For all three second place finishes Kelley received Honorable Mention All-American awards to go along with her First Team honors in the Javelin making her a four-time All-American at the 2008 Nationals. Also for the Lady Knights Kristin Vanhouwe (North Smithfield, RI) placed 12th in the 1500m run in a time of 5:51.40. Vanhouwe placed 12th in the preliminaries in a time of 5:46.58 to advance to Saturday’s final round.

James Sylvestre led the Knights squad by placing in the top eight in all three long distance events in which he competed. In the 10,000m Sylvestre was fourth in a time of 34:34.70. James then came back to place seventh in the 5,000m in a time of 16:26.02. In his finial event the 3,000m steeplechase Sylvestre ran tough to make it to the podium for his eighth place finish in a time of 10:44.17. James ran an event in each day of the three day National Championship.

The Knights competed in all three relay events at the Championships but failed to score in them. In the 4x100m the team of Cory Rocha (Riverside, RI), Dennis LaFleur (Coventry, RI), Chris Alegretta (Warwick, RI) and Mark Kollie (Providence, RI) was 16th in the time of 48.71. They also ran the 4x400m relay and placed 14th in a time of 3:43.72. In the 4x800m relay the Knights team made up of Sylvestre, Rocha, David Pelkey (Cranston, RI) and Alegretta placed 12th in a time of 8:53.73.

Final point totals for the Knights and Lady Knights were on the men’s side Harper College finished first with 143 points and the Knights were 17th with eight points out of 23 schools at the meet. On the women’s side Herkimer County CC was first with 135 points the Lady Knight were 11th 34 out of 23 teams at the meet.

Kelley and Sylvestre Lead CCRI at Day One of Track Nationals

The CCRI Knights and Lady Knights track teams are competing at the 2008 Division III track and field nationals at the SUNY-Delhi in New York. At the meet CCRI was led by their MVP’s Amanda Kelley (Cumberland, RI) and James Sylvestre (Lincoln, RI).

Amanda Kelley placed second in the hammer throw with a throw of 41.75m with the throw Kelley earns Second Team All-American honors and scored the CCRI women’s team eight team points. The Hammer throw has historically been a tremendous event for the Lady Knights as Jasmine Jennings (Warwick, RI) set the NJCAA record in 2005 with a throw of 51.72m more recently Jennings competed at the A-10 Tournament for URI and won the hammer with a throw of 202’-01”, a URI and A-10 record. She shattered the record of 179’-06” set by Michelle Fournier of URI in 1997.

James Sylvestre placed fourth in the 10,000m with a time of 34:34.70 giving the Knights five team points. In the 4x800m relay the team of James Sylvestre, David Pelkey (Cranston, RI), Cory Rocha (Riverside, RI), and Chris Allegretta (Warwick, RI) placed 12th in a time of 8:53.73. Also on the men’s side the 4x100 team of Rocha, Allegretta, Dennis LaFleur (Coventry, RI), and, Mark Kollie (Providence, RI) placed 16th in a time of 48.71.

After day one the Lady Knights are in seventh place with eight points after three events scored and the Knights are in 10th place with five events scored.

Lady Knights Struggle but Gain Valuable Experience as a Team

The Lady Knights entered day three with hopes of salvaging some pride and some points. The lady Knights took to the courts in Tucson, AZ with a chance in three positions (#1 singles, #3 singles and #1 doubles) to make the back draw finals. The day closed with all three positions losing toughly contested matches that, unfortunately, did not go in the Lady Knights’ favor.

The first match to take to the courts was #3 singles where Jill Putrino (Exeter, RI) matched up against Sara Wimbesh of Northeast Community College, also looking for her team's first points in the tournament. Putrino fought hard but when serving to even the 8-game pro-set at seven, she was broken and dropped the match 8-6.

Next Lindsay Osborn (E. Greenwich, RI) took the courts against Harford Community College’s Katrina Tiedeman. Osborn also battled but succumbed 8-4 as this was her fourth match in as many days having been playing singles and doubles this week.

The final match of the day featured the Lady Knights’ #1 doubles pairing of Osborn and Hannah Koski (Coventry, RI) vs. Oxford College's Madeline Spratt and Whitney Woodruff. Spratt and Woodruff were the top seed in #1 doubles but lost to Rock Valley's Fisher and Rapp, the same team that had sent Osborn and Koski to the back draw from the main draw. Spratt and Woodruff, regrouped and were able to defeat Osborn and Koski, who were playing together for only their third time all year including the two matches at Nationals.

Head Coach Deb Panzica said after yesterday’s matches, “All-in-all it was a great experience and we look forward to building on what we learned this year and hope to make it back next year, better prepared and looking forward to more success.”

Knights Upended by #8 Ranked UConn-Avery Point in Region XXI Championship 8-5

The CCRI Knights baseball team lost in the Region XXI Championship game to the #8 ranked UConn-Avery Pointers 8-5. With the loss the Knights finish the season 22-14.

On the mound for the Knights Victor Baez (Providence, RI) pitched well for the first four innings but began to lose control in the fifth walking multiple UCAP batters. Baez ended going 4-1/3 innings allowing four runs, three earned on just one hit but he walked eight. Baez was relieved by Collin McMaster (Elma, WA) who threw one inning allowing three runs on three hits with a walk to take the loss. Dave Maher relieved McMaster and did not record an out giving up a run on two hits and Warren Sternberg (North Kingstown, RI) finished out the game throwing 2 -2/3 innings allowing no runs on one hit walking one a striking out three.

A the plate for the Knights Co-Captain Luis Chacon (West Warwick, RI) led the way going 2-5 with a run scored and an RBI and Luke Abraham (Cumberland, RI) was 1-4 with two RBI.

This was a very tough loss for the Knights as they were leading 5-0 after four innings but could not hold onto the lead as UConn-Avery Point answered with four runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth giving them their final margin of victory at 8-5. This was a difficult end to a great season for the Knights but they have nothing to hang their heads about because they gave it their best.

Lady Knights Struggle in More Opening Round Matches

Day two was another disappointing day on the courts for the Lady Knights tennis team. Hannah Koski (Coventry, RI) dropped a #2 singles contest to Gloucester Community College Jessica Spina who then advanced to the semi-finals on the strength of that win. Spina had played Sunday a tough three-set match which actually appeared to give her the advantage as she started strong, breaking Koski in the second game and holding on to that break to take the first set 6-2. Koski then grabbed an early break in the second set and it looked like another three-setter was on the way but at 3-2 Spina broke back, then held, broke again and finally held to close out the set and the match 6-2 6-3.

In #3 singles Jill Putrino (Exeter, RI) played well but lost to the more experienced Caitlyn Lawrence of Ocean County College (NJ), 6-1, 6-1. Putrino had chances but the diminutive Lawrence seemed twice her size as she covered all of Putrino's shots including virtually all of her lob attempts. Putrino moved really well and had some nice points, but was unable to make much headway against the more experienced player.

Rounding out the main draw play for the day was Lindsay Osborn (E Greenwich, RI) and Hannah Koski in a #1 doubles contest against another experienced team, this time from Rock Valley College. Allie Fisher and Sarah Rapp jumped out to a quick break, and then the teams traded breaks until 3-2 when RVC was able to stem the tide by holding serve, breaking CCRI’s serve and holding again to close out the first set 6-2. An identical score in the second set secured the win for RVC over CCRI in a match that featured some impressive doubles points on both sides.

The final match of the day was an 8-game pro-set in the #2 singles back draw between Hannah Koski and Amanda Lindsley of Broome Community College. Koski was not comfortable with the draw from the start, and, playing on a singles court (no doubles alley) for the first time in her life added to the oddity of the affair that saw Koski drop eight straight games to lose 8-0.

The Knights remain in action on day three with Osborn in a #1 singles semi-final match in the Consolation round verses Katrina Tiedeman of Harford Community College, Putrino in a #3 singles semi-final match in the consolation match against Sara Wimbesh from Northeast Community College (Missouri), and a #1 doubles match-up that awaits the next round loser in the #1 doubles main draw. Finals for all three contests await them on Wednesday if we can succeed tomorrow.

Day One Addendum: there was some good news at the Nationals for the Lady Knights that happened the previous night. At this year's NJCAA Women’s Tennis Nationals an additional contest was added to the competition - a contest that the CCRI women's tennis team finished second overall and placed as the highest DIII finisher. This was the inaugural year of the NJCAA Nationals Idol Karaoke contest! The CCRI women finished a strong second, but not without a little bit of controversy as the winning team was not a team at all, but rather an individual player from a Division I team. The judges seemed to feel that taking the stage alone showed some serious nerve, but the CCRI team had received serious attention throughout day two as the crowd favorites! Contest organizers have indicated that some additional guidelines will have to be put in place for next year's tournament to make sure that teams participate together.

Knights Split First Two Games of Region XXI Championship with 8th ranked UCAP Will Play for Championship Monday at 4:00pm!

The CCRI Knights baseball team lost in game one of the Region XXI Championship to NJCAA 8th ranked UConn-Avery Point Pointers 10-7 but stormed back to win game two 14-6 and force third game tie-breaker Monday at UConn-Avery Point at 4:00pm.

Game one: CCRI-7 UCAP-10

On the mound for the Knights Warren Sternberg (North Kingstown, RI) could not contain the bats of the Pointers lasting only three innings allowing eight runs, six earned on nine hits, walking three and striking out one. This was an atypical outing for Sternberg who had been pitching very well as of late but the bats of the 8th ranked Pointers were just too much to handle as Sternberg’s record drops to 5-4 on the season. Sternberg was relived by Collin McMaster (Elma, WA) who threw four solid inning s allowing two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out two. Dave Maher (Richmond, RI) pitched the final inning allowing no runs on two hits striking out one.

At the plate for the Knights Luke Abraham (Cumberland, RI) led the way going 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored. He was followed by George Tager (North Providence, RI) who was 2-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored and Kyle Borden (Lincoln, RI) was 2-4 with a double and two RBI.

Game two: CCRI-14 UCAP-6

On the mound for the Knights Bobby Swann (Cumberland, RI) was excellent throwing seven innings allowing just four runs on nine hits with three walks and seven strikeouts to raise his record to 5-1 on the season. Swann was relieved by John Amore (Johnston, RI) who pitched two innings allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out two.

At the plate for the Knights Co-Captain George Tager (North Providence, RI) was a man among boys going a perfect 3-3 stroking two homeruns and a double with four RBI and four runs scored followed by Jarred Parrott (Keene, NH) who went 2-4 highlighted by a grand slam with three runs scored and four RBI. Also having a big game at the plate was Kyle Borden (Lincoln, RI) who was 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored, Nick Simon (Pawtucket, RI) went 2-3 with a double and a run scored and Luke Abraham (Cumberland, RI) went 2-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

The Knights fell in game on but pounced on the 8th ranked Pointers in game two to set-up the deciding game to be played Monday at UConn-Avery Point at 4:00pm.

Sylvestre and Kelley Lead CCRI at Northeast District Championships!

The CCRI Men’s and Women’s Track and field team Traveled top Howard Community college to compete in the Northeast District Championships and did well on both the men’s and women’s side.

For the Knights James Sylvestre (Lincoln, RI) won the 10k in 33:46.33. Sylvestre also came back to place fourth in 1,500m run in a time of 4:17.82. This makes the third individual event that Sylvestre has qualified himself to run at the National Championships. For the Lady Knights Amanda Kelley (Cumberland, RI) won the Javelin throw with a 34.82m toss. Kelley also placed second in the hammer with her best effort of the season with a throw of 40.23m. She then placed second in the discus with a 36.23 throw. Then in the shot put Kelley was third with her best toss of the spring season with a throw of 11.18m.

The Men’s 4x400m relay team placed seventh in a time of 3:37.33. The team members were Dennis LaFleur (Coventry, RI), Cory Rocha (Riverside, RI), Sylvestre and Mark Kollie (Providence, RI). Rocha and Chris Allegretta (Warwick, RI) ran the in the 800m race. Rocha was 10th in a career best time of 2:07.47and Allegretta also ran a career best time 2:16.93 good for 15th place. With these times the composite time for the 4x800m relay is 8:46 which is five seconds below the national standard and qualifies the team of Sylvestre, Rocha, David Pelkey (Cranston, RI) and Allegretta for next weekend’s National meet.

Running on the women’s side Kristin Vanhouwe (North Smithfield, RI) placed third in the 1,500m run in a time of 5:36.85. Vanhouwe also came back to place third in the 5,000m event in a time of 22:04.

Other Knights finishers included: LaFleur and Kollie ran the 100m dash and placed LaFleur was 18th in 11.99 and Kollie was 20th in 12.07. The 4x100m relay was disqualified for a hand violation.

Final results summary on the men’s side Middlesex CC came in first with 148.50 points and CCRI was 11th with 17points of 14 teams that competed at the meet. On the women side Gloucester CC was first with 178 points and CCRI was fifth with 44 points out of 12 teams at the meet.

All members of the CCRI men’s and Women’s squad will compete next weekend at the NJCAA National Championships starting this Thursday and going through Saturday at Delhi CC in New York.

Disappointing Day one at Women’s Tennis Nationals for the Lady Knights

Day one at the 2008 NJCAA Women's National Tennis Championships was a disappointment for the CCRI Lady Knights top player Lindsay Osborn. (East Greenwich, RI). Nerves, tough calls early and the opponent's passive playing style all combined to do in Lindsay as she was defeated in straight sets 6-0 and 6-0.

Taking the court at just after 3:00 local time (6:00pm ET) at the Randolph Tennis Center in Tucson, AZ, Osborn faced off against the #1 singles player from Broome Community College, Jamie Mishoe. Mishoe won the toss and elected to serve and came out playing well and using a different style then Osborn is use to, using a lot of lobs and passive play forcing Osborn to hit perfect shots. Osborn struggled and was taken right out of her game from the start. Before Osborn could blink the first set was over and Mishoe had taken it 6-0. Osborn couldn't shake her frustration or Mishoe’s perfect lob shots and succumbed in the second set with an identical 6-0 score. Lindsay looks forward to the Consolation draw where she will play on Tuesday at 3:30 local time. Osborn does not yet know her opponent but it could possibly be Mishoe again and she looks forward to a possible rematch.

CCRI's second singles Hannah Koski (Coventry, RI) and third singles Jillian Putrino (Exeter, RI) both received first round byes and will play Monday at 11:30 and 12:00 respectively. Osborn and Koski will round out play in #1 doubles Monday at 3:30.

Knights Batter Bridgeport JV 14-4 to improve to 21-12 on the season!

The CCRI Knights baseball team defeated the Bridgeport JV team 14-4. With the victory the Knights end the regular season with a 21-12 overall record and 10-5 record in Region XXI play.

On the mound for the Knights Kyle Kells (Scituate, RI) notched his first victory of the year throwing five strong innings allowing four runs, only two of them earned, on just three hits, walking two and striking out two. This was Kells’ first start of the year and it was a memorable one as he was in complete control as he led the Knights to victory.

At the plate for the Knights Mike Mooney (Pawtucket, RI) led the way going a perfect 3-3 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Also having a good day at the plate was Greg Joseph (North Attleboro, MA) who went 2-3 with a homerun, a double, two RBI and two runs scored and Co-Captain George Tager (North Providence, RI) went 2-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

This was a very good victory for the Knights who now head into the Region XXI Championship Series this weekend at and versus UConn-Avery Point. This first game will be Friday at 4:00pm and the second game will be Saturday at 1:00pm. This series is a best of three so if there is a game three it would be Sunday at 1:00pm.
