Knights Men’s Soccer Fall in Final Game 1-0 to Dean College

The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team lost their last soccer game of the season in a very closely contested 1-0 defeat to Region XXI rival Bulldogs of Dean College. With the loss the Knights’ record falls to 5-8-2 on the season and 3-5-1 in Region XXI play.

The Knights were out for revenge after losing 3-0 to Dean on Saturday. Though this time the Knights were playing on the road at Dean College, this game would be much closer. Unfortunately for the Knights the outcome was the same.

The Knights found themselves trailing 1-0 in the first half on a goal by the Bulldog’s Eric Owens assisted by King Him Hong. The score would remain 1-0 at the half. The Knights did everything in their power to try and get the equalizer but were unable to convert on their scoring opportunities. The Knights were able to get multiple shots on net during the game but bulldog Goalkeeper Nick Clark thwarted their efforts with 12 saves. The Knights Goalkeepers also put forth an excellent effort in net combining for eight saves Jason Oliveira (Cumberland, RI) with six saves and Alejandro Restrepo (Central Falls, RI) with two saves.

Though the Knights came up short of the postseason they still put forth an excellent season and have plenty to build upon as they look forward to next year.

CCRI’s Sylvestre Runs Seventh in Franklin Park Mayor’s Cup!

On Saturday the CCRI Knights and Lady Knights Cross Country runners participated in there last regular season meet of the year. They took the trip north to Boston to compete in the Mayors Cup in Franklin Park. The race was short and fast with the course only being a distance of 3.1 miles. Once again, the Knights were led by 2007 Second Team All-American Sophomore James Sylvestre (Lincoln, RI). James finished the race in a time of 16 minutes 31 seconds which was good enough for seventh place. He was followed by fellow Knights Chris Allegretta (Warwick, RI) in 59th place in a time of 19:21 and Josh Santos (Pawtucket, RI) finishing in 77th with a time of 20:11. Knights Men’s Soccer Playoff Hopes Dashed by 3-0 Loss to Dean College

The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team was playing for the post-season life as they faced Region XXI rivals Dean College. The Knights playing Dean on Saturday the 25th and Tuesday the 28th needed a win and a tie to have any chance of making it into the post-season. Expectations were high for a great Region XXI game. The prize for the Knights was to stay in the race for the semi-final playoff against Massasoit Community College. Unfortunately, The Knights were defeated 3-0. With the loss the Knights’ record drops to 5-7-2 on the season and 3-4-1 in Region XXI play.

It was The Knights’ usual game script in the 2008 season. The Knights played very well right from the beginning, creating numerous scoring chances but misfiring. In the 33rd minute it was Dean striking on a ball that went in directly from a corner kick, aided by a powerful wind gust. Which made the score 1-0 Dean at the half.

In the second half the Knight’s continued good play and once again missed a couple of great scoring opportunities in the opening five minutes. Soon after some physical contact by one of the Bulldogs which resulted in retaliation by a CCRI player and subsequent ejection from the game. This resulted in the Knights playing a man down for the rest of the game. Even with only 10 players the Knights continued to pressure Dean looking for the tying goal. In one play it looked like the ball may have crossed the goal line but it was not to be. It wasn’t until the 34th minute of the second half that Dean scored to make it 2-0. In an offensive effort to get two goals in a short amount of time, the Knights gave up the final goal at the 42nd minute mark making the final score 3-0 Dean College.

Head Coach Victor Gaspar Commented after the match: “This was a very disappointing loss for the Knights who end their season this Tuesday against Dean again this time at Dean in Franklin MA.”

The Knights are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Dean College at 3:00pm for their last game of the season.

Knights Soccer Falls 2-0 to Essex County College

The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team lost a very tough game versus the Wolverines of Essex County College 2-0. With the loss the Knights’ record drops to 5-6-2 on the season.

The Knights found themselves trailing 2-0 in the first half on two goals from Wolverine forward Bamoutaga Ballo. The Knights did everything in their power to get into the game in the second half but were unsuccessful on their scoring attempts. Knights’ goalkeepers Jason Oliveira (Cumberland, RI) had seven saves and Alejandro Restrepo (Central Falls, RI) had three saves.

The Knights are back in action Saturday October 25th when they will host Region XXI rival Dean College and Tuesday the 28th when the travel to Dean College in two very important games. The Knights must get at least a win and a tie to have a chance at post-season play.

Lady Knights to Meet Genesee CC in Volleyball District Championship November 1st at 1:00pm!

The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team (37-4) will meet the Lady Cougars of Genesee Community College (17-21) in the Division II Volleyball District Championship. The District Championship will be hosted by Genesee CC on Saturday, Nov. 1st at 1:00pm. It will be a best three out of five match CCRI vs. Genesee. Normally there is a semi-final game involving Region XIX but Region XIX has decided not to send a representative.

The Lady Knights and Genesee CC have a long history with Genesee knocking out the Lady Knights in the District Tournament the past four years. However, recently over the past two years the Lady Knights have closed the gap on the perennial northeast powerhouse and this year, with all their success, could be the year for the Lady Knights to make their first ever trip to the NJCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball National Championship November 20th-22nd in Chula Vista, Wisconsin.

The Lady Knights are having another excellent season with the second most wins in CCRI history with a 37-4 record the only time they had a better record was 39-7 in 2006. In addition, the 2007 Lady Knights are the team that brought Head coach Ray DeAngelis his 200th Career Collegiate victory versus Northern Essex October 8th. DeAngelis commented after that match “I could not think of a better group to have coached to get my 200th victory.”

The Lady Knights’ success is a function of the team performing well as a team which has led many of the Lady Knights to be ranked nationally and in some cases in the CCRI record book.
The first Lady Knight putting up mind boggling numbers in Cory Santos (Carlsbad, CA) who is leading the nation (NJCAA Division II) and has set the CCRI School record in aces and aces per game with 149 total aces in 101 games for 1.48 per game the record was 107 aces by April Oberhelman in 2005. In fact Cory is only 27 aces form setting the CCRI career mark for aces the current mark is held again by Oberhelman with 175 (2005-2006). Santos is also ranked 27th in the nation in assists per game with 843 assists in 101 games for 8.35 assists per game. The second Lady Knight excelling is Suzanne Landry (Tiverton, RI) ranked sixth in hitting efficiency with 369 kills and only 74 errors for 45.31% efficiency. Suzanne is also ninth in Kills per game with 369 in 97 games for 3.8 per game. Captain Ashley Mangione (Warwick, RI) is sixth in digs per game with 639 in 98 games for 6.52 per game, she is just 25 digs away from breaking the CCRI single season digs mark set by Jasmine Bonanca of 663 in 2006.

Amanda Valentine (West Warwick, RI) is ranked sixth in blocks per game with 159 in 105 games for 1.514 per game followed by Jessica Greene (Warwick, RI) ranked seventh with 118 in 78 games for 1.513 per game. Tia Becker (Clark Fork, ID) is ranked ninth in digs per game with 601 in 97 games for 6.2 per game and 46th in aces with 50 in 97 games for .52 per game. Rounding out he Lady Knights national leaders are Jessica Putrino (Exeter, RI) ranked 20th in aces per game with 45 in 73 games for .62 per game and Ashley Lamphere (Warwick, RI) who is 29th in blocks per game with 114 in101 games for 1.3 per game.

The Lady Knights have their work cut out for them if they are going to accomplish their goal of winning the District Championship and making their first trip to the Women’s Volleyball Division II National Championship the weekend of November 20th in Wisconsin. Only one obstacle stands in their way Genesee Community College. Head Coach Ray DeAngelis said of the Lady Knights chances of meeting their goal “We have the talent to make it to the championship for the first time, the question remains can we put it all together and work as a team against the nations’ top talent. I believe we can and when our young ladies come to play, they know they can too.”

Knights Soccer Shuts Out Springfield Technical CC 2-0!

The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team defeated Region XXI foe Rams of Springfield Technical Community College 2-0. With the victory the Knights improve their record to 5-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in Region XXI play.

The Knights finally got a breather in their tough schedule, after playing four games in eight days.
CCRI played some nice soccer right from the beginning of the game. As has been the case all season the Knights missed some easy scoring chances early. As the first half ticked away STCC backed up all players into their defensive half and it wasn’t until the 30th minute that the Knights’ David Duffney (Warwick, RI) scored on rebound off a shot from Ricardo Aldana (Attleboro, MA) making the score 1-0.

In the second half it was much of the same as in the first half with CCRI knocking the ball around looking for openings in Ram’s defense. It took a beautiful full volley shot from Patrick Araujo (Pawtucket, RI) to put the game away with the score 2-0 CCRI. Knights Goalkeeper Jason Oliveira (Cumberland, RI) recorded three saves in goal for The Knight’s second shutout of the season.

The Knights will play Essex County College this Thursday at home on the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln at 3:00pm.

Go Knights!

Knights’ Soccer Falls to No. 9 Ranked Manchester CC in 1-0 Heartbreaker

The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team lost to No. 9 ranked (NJCAA DIII) Cougars of Manchester CC 1-0. With the loss the Knights’ record is now 4-5-2 on the season and 2-3-1 in Region XXI play.

The Knights finally returned home after three weeks playing on the road and played one of their best games of the season against No. 9 ranked (NJCAA DIII) Manchester CC. to kick off the game CCRI student advisor Jim Morris who also serves as Knights soccer game announcer sang his rendition of the National Anthem which created an excellent atmosphere for the game to follow.
This was a good challenge for the Knights as Manchester, a Division III school, has beaten all of its Division I opponents this season. The Knights gave up a soft goal on a free kick cross in the 16 minute by Jemmy Cange from Austin Fetzer, making the match more difficult that it should have been for the Knights.

After giving up the lone goal of the game, the Knights pressured the Cougars until the end looking for the equalizer and almost put the game into overtime on a well executed free kick with just minutes to go. Unfortunately, the score did not reward the Knights’ effort as the Knights took the tough 1-0 loss.

CCRI’s next game is this Saturday in Springfield as part of a CCRI Lady Knights and Knights vs. Springfield Tech CC soccer programs doubleheader. The Lady Knights will kick-off at 12noon while the Knights will play at 2:00pm.

No. 11 ranked Lady Knights Defeat Dean 6-0 to win Eighth Straight Region XXI Title!

The No. 11 ranked (NJCAA and NSCAA) CCRI Lady Knights dominated the Bulldogs of Dean College 6-0 to win their eighth consecutive Region XXI title and earned the right play in the District play-offs. The other two remaining teams in the District play-offs have yet to be officially determined.

The Lady Knights’ leading scorer Alexis Smith (Wakefield, RI) scored the game winner at the 14th minute mark of the first half. In the second half Massasoit took advantage of the Knights’ sloppy play and put in three unanswered goals in the first 20 minutes. Down three goals, is never an easy task to turn around at Massasoit but the Knights evened out the rest of the match and made the final score of 3-1, on a goal from Nour Alkhiamy (Johnston, RI) assisted by Kevin DeBrito (North Providence, RI).

Playoff round
CCRI loses to Morton 25-27 and 23-25
The first set of this “Murphy’s Law” Match was in full effect. Every ball that could bounce against the Lady Knights and for Morton happened, including what was the hardest hit ball of the season by Suzanne Landry (Tiverton, RI) hitting off of a Morton player’s shoulder and rebounding all the way to the ceiling 20 feet off court to hit a beam and bounce back into playable area to be returned by Morton. After playing very hard and losing the first set 25-27 the Lady Knights were in a bit of a funk in the second set and were down 8-16 when Head Coach Ray DeAngelis called a time out and never spoke to the players allowing them to “fix themselves” the strategy worked well as the Lady Knights staged a tremendous comeback but fell just short losing 23-25

With misses on five or six excellent scoring opportunities, CCRI finally got on the board with a goal from Midfielder Sergio DeMelo (Warwick, RI) in the 43rd minute. DeMelo struck again in the 45th minute, both assisted by Forward Cee Harris (Woonsocket, RI).
